Which black for engine brackets?
#1
Apologies - I searched across forums to no avail.  I know I've seen the answer before, but my Sunday-morning-brain must be failing me because I can't find the answer:

'73 351C-4v, which Ford black was used on the underhood engine brackets, such as for alternator, power steering, etc.?  Matte or glossy?

Thanks,

A good reference for these types of details is the 429 megasite, they say semi-gloss:

Semi gloss or satin black, either Rustoleum, Krylon or SEM.

Krylon 1613 was what I preferred, but IIRC it's discontinued.

Yes, the satin black is awesome.  NEVER go gloss under the hood.

I've always had good luck with VHT 'Roll Bar and Chassis' black in satin finish. It comes in gloss too - just make sure you get the satin. Autozone, etc. has it for about $8. It covers well and holds up.

If you are going for concours, Ford used a lot of different vendors for brackets and stuff under the hood, and all the parts came in painted from the vendor. The parts were usually dipped rather than sprayed, so there tended to be a range of finishes. So use a number of different rattle cans from different companies, look for the drip on the bracket before you strip it, and lay the paint on a bit heavy to get the drip. Or get really crazy and buy 3 or 4 five gallon pails of black from different sources and actually dip your parts.

If you just want a nice engine bay - go with the satin.
