wheels: how wide can I go on an 8 inch?
I saw that American Racing sells an Ansen slotted wheel in 17x8 but I am running 275/40-17. Is this to wide?
That should fit, I used to run a 255 on a 7 inch wide rim. Ok, that was a 60 sidewall on a 15 inch diameter but I don´t think the lower ratio should cause too many problems.

Check out my video:

Where are you seeing those 17" ansens? Most places that had them don't any more.

1973 Mach 1 Q code 351 4V, 9A paint, standard interior, 3.50 rear, C6 trans.
On the American Racing site (VN69). They sell 17x8 with a 0 offset and a 4.5" backspace. I just noticed they are now asking a 17x9 with a -12mm offset but it doesn't show the backspace.
While this may not answer your specific question, I will take this opportunity to post a link that I have frequently utilized when trying to determine what has been documented as a "fit" for Mustangs.

In using these charts, I have come to believe that anything that fits on an earlier Mustang will fit on our MustangsSmile.

Do the RIGHT thing.

I have been researching this a bit as I am due for new tires. It seems it depends on the manufacturer of the tire as some tires run larger than others even though listed as the same size. From what I have read Nittos tend to run smaller and will work on an 8" wheel. Other brands may bulge a bit. There are many posts on the Corral on this subject where you can find some pictures.

When in doubt follow the tire manufacture's recommendations for max/min wheel size.
