I'll have to check tonight but I'm pretty sure I got 24F for mine.

Both groups were offered, but the larger 27 would generally be used for larger engines like the 351C and 429s. A/C units and Rev limiters etc.. used the group 27 batteries, but both were used. I would stay away from the acid type and go with the AGM or Optima redtop batteries. Who needs the corrosion and acid leaks?

Love your car man! I just did a search and saw a period correct replica of the Autolite battery in AGM. May look into that if you plan on showing the car and making it all original.

the 72 CJ would have had an Autolite group 24 if it was built before about the end of March, 1972. after that it would have been a Motorcraft (I've been down this road recently). The autolite is reproduced by a company called turbo start and sold by various restoration shops. It is a true AGM sealed battery, looks completely correct, and is not a small battery stuffed inside an Autolite case. I got mine from Virginia Mustang.

I ordered a Group 27 battery tray I found on ebay, I was pleased as the tray fit like a glove. Didnt have to drill a single hole!

I'm glad it went in with no drama. After a lot of searching and talking to a lot of 71-73 owners, it seems Ford only put one size of battery tray in the 71-73 Mustangs. It defaulted to a size that would accept the largest battery, group 27.

Whether you use the group 24 or 27 I'm pretty sure it should have an "F" after the number because the positive and negative terminals are on the opposite side of the battery than the plain 24 or 27. This way your battery cables are sure to reach the correct end.

has anyone tried the AGM batteries? My Interstate Mega-tron is stone dead from sitting for 3mos unter the cover. It's 4yrs old so i might not want to try to jump it and charge it. Sears only makes the 24F in the Diehard gold, no platinum AGM. anyone have an opinion on the AGM? they arent any lighter, dont seem to have any more CCA's...i am guessing they have a slight advantage with vibrations which is important. but double the price? think i will have any problems if i just jump my well used Interstate?
