Weekly Fun Question for 9/21/2013
Good Day All:

Information relative to the Weekly Fun Question (WFQ) exercise can be found on a thread under the "Site News" Forum. VIP Members should not respond to this thread as the question is also being posted on the VIP Forum.

The Problem for this week was developed by T-K, the winner of a previous WFQ from the VIP Forum.  The question is:

Please identify the 4-speed manual transmission(s) that were used in the 1971 - 1973 Mustangs.  A complete response will include the name of the transmission(s), the years in which it/they was/were used and the difference(s) between the transmissions.

Good Luck!
The anticipated response:

-Wide ratio( 5 ) and close ratio ( 6 )
-Close ratio only in 71
-Wide ratio = 31 tooth on second gear and Close = 28 tooth on second gear.

The 4 spd toploader transmission was used in the 71-73 Mustangs. Behind the 71 Boss 351, it was available in wide ratio and close ratio. In 71 the wide ratio toploader was code 5 and the close ratio toploader was code 6. Not sure if the ratio options were available in 72 and 73, but 4 spd trans were code 5 and E, so I suspect that close ratio was code E.

Just to keep thinks straight,  close ratio 4-speed transmissions (code 6) were mandatory for all 1971 429 cars.  As most know 1971 was the only year 429's were available in the Mustang.
Boss 351's were only available with wide ratio transmissions (code 5).  1972 cars equipped with the optional 351 HO engine all received the wide ratio 4 speeds as well.
