Weekly Fun Question for 3-26-2011
Good Day All:

The Weekly Fun Question (WFQ) is an exercise to give "General" members the opportunity to test their knowledge on information relative to the '71 - '73 Mustangs. It is also designed to allow the same members the chance to "win" a nice #1 Icon when they are the first to provide the desired response. If a general member "wins" on three separate occasions, the member will have his/her membership (a $25.00 value) paid for a VIP subscription.

Please note that when you respond to this post, your "answer" will not appear until the end of the current contest (usually at approximately 7:00 P.M. {CST}) the following Monday when the thread is normally transferred to the "Archives" Forum.

While VIP members can also "play", their reward is "bragging rights" amongst their peers on the VIP Forum. General members are NOT competing against VIP members in this exercise. VIP members have their very own "contest" which has even more substantive awardsSmile.

The question for this week is a 2-part one and pertains to a 1972 Convertible stock Mustang with a 351C 2V, Air conditioner, 3-Speed Manual Transmission and a stock Open Rear End. To "win", you must address both parts of the question. The specific question is:

What is the optimum tire diameter that should be used in order to operate at a speed of 120 MPH for the above Mustang? The second part of the question is to explain how you arrived at your conclusion.

Good Luck!

BT
While the miles per hour (MPH) and the "constant" (336) are given, we must determine the gear ratio (GR) and revolutions per minute (RPM) of the car in question. While missing, the information is available when we concentrate on the fact that this is a "STOCK" 351C 2V, with Air conditioner, 3-Speed Manual Transmission and a stock Open Rear End.

The mandatory rear end ratio for this combination is 2.75 and the "stock" 2V camshaft makes peak power at 4000 RPM. Again, the formula would be:

MPH X GR X 336 divided by RPM = TD or

120 X 2.75 X 336 divided by 4000 = 27.72 Inch Diameter Tire
None

Do the RIGHT thing.

After some research I am going to take an educated guess at 25.9 for the diameter of an F 60 15 tire (optional on all models) because I would not want to go that fast on an E 78 14 tire (standard on this particular model) I can only explain that I looked up the tire diameters on a tire conversion website.

I am just here to eat my lunch and screw stuff up!!!!!Haha

I'm not really sure what you mean by optimum tire....but I would imagine around a 26 inch diameter.

The tire dia should be 15" .

The stock size tire was the 14" and that was with both the 6 cyl and the 302 , when the car was optioned with the 351 tire size increased to 15" dia due to speed and extra curb weight.

For you who have already replied to this question, I am going to give you a second chance as I believe there might be some confusion regarding the question.

When I say optimum tire size on this "stock" Mustang, I am referring to the POSSIBLE modification (replacement) of the stock tires for 120 MPH speeds.

For you who already understood the question, press on with your calculations/research and submit your responses.

...and remember, this is a 2-part questionSmile.

still don't understand the question.

What is meant by optimum?

Best diameter tire to produce the best gas milage at 120 mph?

Best diameter tire to achieve a speed of 120 mph the most quickly?

To simplify things and for the purpose of this exercise, let's say you want to drive around at 120 mph.

Well, it would appear that we have not received any additional responses.

Rather than end "the torture", below is another "hint."

TD= MPH X GR X 336 divided by RPM

TD is tire diameter
MPH is miles per hour
GR is rear gear ratio
336 is the Constant
RPM is the revolutions per minute

I will leave the question up for an additional 24 hours.

Good Luck

Man scratching my head here

17" = 120 x8.6x336/4,800 actually works out to 16.6 but I rounded up
