VIP Weekly Fun Question for February 16, 2013
SUPERSTARS!

The problem for this week:

Based on the information provided below, which of the following choices would have had the largest number of 1971 Mustangs available with a ginger interior? The acceptable response should include the total number for each application.

a. 1T03F142075 with Exterior Color Code "D"

b. 1F02H209441 with Exterior Color Code "B"

c. 1F05M213188 with Exterior Color Code "J"

This exercise will terminate at approximately 7:00PM (CST) on Monday, February 18, 2013.

Good Luck!

BT
The 2nd letter of the "Trim Code" denotes the color of the interior. In the case of ginger, that letter is "F." For 1971, the available ginger codes are "1F", "3F', "4F", "5F", "5FA", "BF", "CF", and "CFA." (Source: The Mustang and Cougar Tagbook, Pages 71 - 73)

a. 1T03F142075 with Exterior Color Code "D" is a 1971 (1 Code), Metuchen (T Code) production facility built, Convertible (03 Code), 302 2V (F Code). Color Code D indicates a Bright Yellow Exterior and the Source (Mustang...by the Numbers) shows there were four (4) Convertibles built with this combination as designated by Trim Code "CF."

b. 1F02H209441 with Exterior Color Code "B" is a 1971 (1 Code), Dearborn (F Code) production facility built Fastback (02 Code), 351 2V (H Code). Color Code B indicates a Maroon Metallic Exterior and the same Source as above shows there was one (1) Fastback built with this combination as designated by Trim Code "1F."

c. 1F05M213188 with Exterior Color Code "J" is a 1971 (1 Code), Dearborn (F Code) production facility built Mach 1 (05 Code), 351 4V (M Code). Color Code J indicates a Grabber Blue Exterior and the same Source as above shows there werezero (0) Mustangs built with any of the Ginger Codes.

The desired response is "A", with some version of the explanation above.

When I was trying to order my 07 I was thinking about a California Special but the computer wouldn't allow spoiler delete. After I ordered a regular GT then Ford allowed it to be ordered on Job 2 cars. The document used also said any 71 in black could be ordered with any color interior. I sure would like to see a black car with the Blue or green interior. I wonder if any ended up being ordered that way?
The "dollar get's you what you want" is an excellent point and that may be one of the reasons that certain information that is published is "at odds" with what actually happened during the production periods.

To respond to your question:

The 2nd letter for "Blue" as it relates to trim codes for 1971 is "B", so yes there were some Black 1971 Mustangs built with the Blue Interior.

Specifically:

There were 3 Black Hardtops and 1 Fastback with the "2B" Code; One hardtop with the 4B code; 9 Fastbacks with the 5B code.

The 2nd letter for "Green" as it relates to trim codes for 1971 is "R", and again there were some Black 1971 Mustangs built with the Green Interior.

Specifically:
There were 4 Black hardtops, 1 Fastback and 1 Convertible built with the "1R" trim code. There was 1 hardtop built with the "4R" trim code. There were 5 Fastbacks built with the "5R" trim codes.

I would love to see one just to see how it looked. Everyone wanted black on black. I think it would be nice to see color other than black, red or white in a black car. All three I have seen in person. I don't think I ever saw ginger in a black car. I know of a dark ivy green boss that had ginger but it was changed to black on black by an owner.

Thanks for the breakdown, BT. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and personally verify some of the data included in the references. So many of our 'stangs no longer exist.

Glad you've got the solid references to support the information you provide, although some seem to contradict one another. That's why having a variety can be so important. And you seem to have them all, thankfully.

Keep up the good work!

From what I can tell, most of the contradictions appear to be from data or publications that were published possibly as the result of "press releases" from Ford that may or may not have borne "fruit."

The "Marti" published information SEEMS to be "on the money" in most cases, so I try to use that information for "sanity checks" when developing the questions.

While I do not want this Site to become a place to "bash" authors or publications, I think it is important to try and show the "disconnects" and believe that should be encouraged if we are to remain the PREMIERE site as it relates to information on the 1971 - 1973 MustangsSmile.

THANKS for the positive comments!
