VIP Weekly Fun Question for 2-25-2012
SUPERSTARS!

Specifics on the VIP Weekly Fun Question (VIP WFQ) can be found under the "Important Threads" section of the Weekly Fun Question Forum.

This week's WFQ was submitted by C9ZX (THANKS, Chuck) as the result of his having posted the winning response to last week's VIP WFQ. The problem this week is:

Assuming both cars are original, please identify the difference(s) (other than the VIN, date codes and part numbers) in components between a 1971 Mach 1 and a 1972 Mach 1. The first VIP Member who can correctly cite the most number of differences will be declared the Winner.

Good Luck!

BT
Please keep in mind that some of the "differences" are not unique to the Mach1 but also exist across the Mustang lines for the 1971 and 1972 Mustangs. The desired responses:

1. Pop-open gas cap on 71, twist-on on 72.
2. Different script on trunk panel
3. Slot added on’72 deck lid for exposed, pop riveted lock cylinder retaining clip
4. Trunk lock secured via clip inside the trunk lid sheet metal in 71, secured via clip inserted from the outside bottom and held in place with 2 rivets on 72 (after March 1, 1972).
5. No M, C or J coded engines available in ‘72
6. Close ratio transmission not available on ‘72
7. Square panel drain plug in ’72 and a round plug for ‘72
8. Seat belt warning light on 72, not on 71
9. Dual vertical hood latch to grille support on 71 (through June 71), single on 72
10. Black plastic fender shield at rear top of front fenders on 71, not on 72.
11. Black plastic splash shield on license plate light on 71, not on 72.
12. Different Radios

Wow, good question! I'm sure I'll think of more after I hit submit.

OK I cheated and saw this from another post on here so I will humbly self-disqualify for the competition. But I am wondering if these items (differences) have been confirmed?

I also remembered some discussion about lower body trim moldings vs the painted lower body (decor group) and tape stripe. I had 'heard' there were some 71-72 differences?

I originally posted in wrong (non VIP) thread -moved to here.

Thanks, Ray

Anyway here is some of the cut and paste from 72HCODE's post:

RE: Mach 1 Spotter's Guide - 72HCODE - 08-30-2010 02:38 PM

Its hard to tell at a distance a 71 from a 72 mach1, you can spot a late 72 however. the 71 rear seat belts were not retractable, later 72s had retractable rear belts. also the buckle changed from the round button to the square button. Also due to government regulation the addition of the Seat-belt warning light was added to the passenger side glove box surround.

if you spot one with a full center console and it has wood trim around the clock and chrome grill light houses then its a super early 1971 car. later the wood faux was dropped and the grill lights changed to argent.

i have a very early 1972 which used a lot of 71 parts as ford was cleaning out the parts storage when they threw mine together.

the deck lid on the 71 early 72 is slightly different also, the trunk has little feet in the steel that was later made flat and the access to the truck lock clip is different (changed due to workers cutting there hands during assembly.

some claim that the 71 and 72 faux wood trim is different also the pattern changed and the wood became a lighter color.

a 71 standard radio is different then the 72 also, it actually says mustang on it, on the radio face.

the dome light changed in 72 the lens uses a different style mount.

Differences... Hmm, good question.

Engines: No M-code or 429 in 72, lower compression in 72 & less horsepower.
Exterior: Trunk lid script, pop open gas cap then screw on cap, early 71s has chrome sports lamps, different color combinations.
Trans: No close ratio 4 speed in 72.
Interior: Seat belt light & buzzer reminder in 72, seat belt retractors, lap belt routing location in interior quarter panel cover, seat back release location.

SUPERSTARS!

To recap the question:

Assuming both cars are original, please identify the difference(s) (other than the VIN, date codes and part numbers) in components between a 1971 Mach 1 and a 1972 Mach 1. The first VIP Member who can correctly cite the most number of differences will be declared the Winner.

Please keep in mind, that some of the differences noted above are not unique to the Mach 1 and may be applicable to other Mustangs built in 1971 and 1972.

5. No M, C or J coded engines available in ‘72
6. Close ratio transmission on ’72

Based on the above, Don65Stang has submitted the post with the most differences from this list. GREAT question, Chuck!

Congratulations Don on your win and you now have the option to develop the question for next week's WFQ.
