That is a distributor vacuum control valve. DVCV

However somebody mounted yours in a rather odd place. It is suppose to go on the water pump housing, but it is inline with the heater core so it is taking coolant temperature but only when your heater core is on which isn't good.
By moving it back to the water pump housing near the alternator it will more accurately take engine coolant temperature and turn on when the engine begins to overheat.

I just looked at the photo again and Eddyw is correct it is a Egr valve

72HCODE Yes, Eddyw has the right part as it has two vacuum connections not three.
Is this available new? Also the inline 2 way hose fitting it screws into?

Yes that's it, I'd just like to find a new one.

Found it at Rock Auto

this is now what I need

I'd prefer a new one or if used in better condition than this one

The Did u ever find out what that was called definitively?
Mine is heater hose mounted , directly inline with waterpump, and the vacuum lines attach as follows , 1 to front of carb and the other to rear of manifold.  NOT to distributor.
Thx
