Trailer Upgrades - Lotsa work this weekend

shrug2shrug2Well some of you might know that last season i've had to com-along my car back onto my trailer twice because of starter issues. (1st one was a OEM rebuilt 71 model and it went dead, the other one broke its nose off). it was such a pain in the ass to get it back on 18 inches at a time. the first time i had to come along it into the driveway as well. the second time i had 2 other guys to help push it all the way up the driveway and the wife in the driver seat.

well the first thing i did was buy 8 feet ramps and now i can no problem get my mach 1 onto the trailer with no truck ramps and additional ramps to the trailer ramps. just put my new ramps down and crank on the tongue jack and off we go.

so here comes the winching part. i bought the biggest alumium box from summit with my pro shop account and a nice winch to go with it. 31lbs for the box and 66lbs for the winch, and at least 30lbs for the frame to build it. thats another 127lbs of additional tongue weight shrug2shrug2. and not to mentional a 25lbs battery, so another 150lbs added to the trailer and its all up front. good thing i got a WDH hitch with chains.

to charge the battery, i put a 5.5 watt solar panel right on top of the box. some buys are only using 2 watt or so to charge their winch batteries and i thought i'd do the same until i put into account that i was going to ALWAYS keep a stinger flashlight in there. i am also thinking about putting a XXX watt converter in there so i can plug in a cordless impact charger or a light.

the battery is a 750 amp battery with 110 reserve capacity and has a 2 year warranty. i was going to get a marine battery for 10 dollars cheaper but its only 650 amps (minimum required) but it has an additional 30 minutes of reserve capacity. i had to make a choice here so i went with the regular car battery which had good reserve capacity and a warranty. i couldn't go with a larger battery because of space inside the box. i had to stay with group 24 batteries.

here is a few pics. i didn't take pics of the frame when it was finish weldded up with some old rusty scrap medal. my boss at work showed me how to build stuff out of metal and how to weld. now i'm hooked on wanting to weld now.

Seen a show this weekend, Stacey Davids Gearz I think, He did the same as you but also made a long set of jumper cables in case he needed to hook to the vehichle battery to run the winch.

thats where i got the idea from originally and besides many guys at the tracks do that. however some guys just put the battery in front of the wood and mount the battery under neath the wood.

in the show, he uses a tiny solar panel which i think is only a 1.8 watt. don't know if thats enough for what i am doing so i over did it with a 5.5 watt. i have long jumper cables if needed, hell maybe i'll just use the mustangs battery while winching it if i need the extra juice.

Speaking of charging batteries, bring a charger to the track with you and charge the cars battery between rounds. You'll be glad you did some day. Big Grin

Low buck, touring style, '73 Convertible "rolling restoration", 351c, 2v heads with a shave and a haircut, Performer intake, Holley 650(ish), roller rockers, screw in studs, guideplates, stainless valves, Duraspark / Motorsports MSD, T-5 conversion. 1-1/8" front, 3/4" rear swaybars KYB shocks and some home brewed subframe connectors. Future plans; JGC steering box, Cobra brakes and... paint, interior, etc.

When I die I want to die like grandpa, peacefully in my sleep... not screaming, like his passenger.

i thought about bring my little 6amp charge and extension cord just in case the winch battery dies out. but why would i need to charge the mach 1's battery between rounds? i see guys doing it but those are the guys don't run alternators or something. i run an aftermarket 1 wire now which seems to be charging now.

but i will take the advice though. maybe i should buy another solar panel for the mustang too. heehhe TongueBig Grin
