Timing/Ignition questions.
#11
After crawling around under the car a bit more, I was able to get a good view of the marks on the harmonic balancer. Looks like the previous owner has a red line at 0° and a white line at about 16° BTC. So when I'm doing the timing I should try to get close to the white line with the vac line pulled and plugged from the distributor correct?

Yes. If your new timing light is adjustable, you can dial in whatever initial degrees you want, then just watch the pointer for when your 'red' zero line lines up. I'm no expert on this, just bought me one of those last year, but the set up was easy peasy. Mind you, I did need to totally rebuild and recurve my distributor first and that was a fun experience!!!! Mine is set for 20 deg. on the crank plus 14 deg. initial for a total of 34 vac. disconnected @ 3000 rpm, on a manual trans car. An auto might be different and I can't help on that one.

My Cardone Duraspark distributor out of the box has the 20-degree advance, and I'm running 16* BTDC (non-vac @ idle).  Runs like a scalded dawg - even with the AOD & 3.00:1 rear gears (I think it had more to do with the hot pavement and the Cooper Cobras, but this past Saturday, I punched it going around a corner and got about 45 feet of its first official burn-out).  thumb

Awesome!!
The Cardone reman I bought had 30 deg. advance, That was the issue and I welded up the slot plate and re-cut it for 20 deg. Equiv L10 slot. not L15. Then I played with spring tension as well.
Good to know the Duraspark comes out of the box at 20 degrees.

Rebuild and recurve? I'm hoping I won't need to do anything like that as it sounds like something I would f*** up. How did you know this needed to be done?

That is awesome!! Hopefully I can join in the burnout fun soon!

**The timing was way off, like 46 degrees at 3K rpm and spark knocked like crazy under load ( gas used is Shell 91 NO ethanol). This was with a Cardone remanufactured distributor and although it was sold as correct for the 351C M code 4 speed, it actually was more for an auto trans I think. Doing my research and learning big time from fellow members, I eventually ripped it apart, took the slot plate out and re worked it for the 20 deg. it needed and then started playing with spring tension to get the advance the engine ran well on. I still can play with it some more, but for now it runs strong. This is a long "story", but there are several post on the subject if you feel like doing a search.**
