Tach and dash wiring/lights project
#1
I'd like to add tach to may 73, it has the four idiot lights (do have 3 working gauges in the center).
I'd like to replace the idiot light and from what I've read the tack from RCCI is the way to go ($210).
I'd also like to replace the printed circuit and put in the dash light harness from Midlife ($75).  Do I have to send my harness to Midlife??  If so how difficult is it to remove??

I won't be starting this for month or so, just want to get all parts ordered as soon as I can.

Thanks for any advise/suggestions

well I hope you post lots of pictures of the process. Its on my list of things to do this year. All my dash lights are intermittent and I want to just replace the whole under-dash harness. I also want to upgrade to a Stock Tach cluster and 3 center gauges at the same time.

So I will be watching for this one.

The dash cluster hard-wire harness runs $100.  If you are willing to splice wires from a pigtail, there would be no need to send your harness in.  That dash cluster harness comes with a Molex quick-disconnect connector pair; you'd be splicing into a pigtail from a connector.

Hmmm...how do you have the 3 gauge cluster wired on a 73 with a non-tach dash cluster?  Someone must have done some creative engineering for sure!  Are these gauges factory stock as well as the sending units?  This configuration was never offered in 72 or 73, but was in 1971.

Let me check your shorts!

The car does have an aftermarket set of gauges in the center (volts/water temp/oil pressure). I need to hook volt meter to ignition and connect light to dash light circuit.

The car has a title for a Mach 1 and the VIN on the dash matches the title. I've got a feeling some one had a junked Mach 1 with a title and they put the upper dash from it in this car. I've never pulled the fenders to look for the VIN number that I'm told is stamped on top of the inner wheel wells. I purchased car from a 23 year old guy. His parents gave him the car for his 16th birthday. The boy really never liked it and it had been sitting for 3 or 4 years when I bought it. The mother told me she bought it off Craigs List and did not know anything about the previous owner.

Right now I pretty much have everything pulled from dash area (except for the wiring)

VIN 3F05H103XXX

This is the first Mustang I've owned and it's been a real eye opening experience. I've owned several GM classic car and right now have a 76 el camino.

thanks for all the help on this thread as well as the others I have.

Tomorrow I will look and see if I can remove the wiring harness. Hopefully it's pretty easy.
