September 2011 COTM! c9zx's Mach 1
#1
This is a long journey but, I'll abbreviate the story. My neighbor knew I was looking for a 1971 or 1972 Mach1 to restore. He travelled the state working for a major utility company. He came into my garage one evening to tell me he might have found a car and had a phone number. One trip to negotiate and a second trip to pick it up and it was in my garage. The plan was to make it look presentable, run well, and build a "decent driver". In the first six months I had completely disassembled the car and had it media blasted. Still I thought, It will be a "very nice driver". So it began, my gradual slide into the world of OCD known as concours driven. Life happens, and as it turned out other priorities took my time, money, and attention for the next 2 1/2 years. The Mustang sat waiting. In July 2009 I retired. I now would work diligently on the Mach1 and have it finished by springtime 2010. I adopted a strategy calling for the car to be fast and look stock, very stock in fact. The engine, transmission, differential, and suspension were in fact completed by springtime 2010. The rest of the car was not. I knew teaching myself to weld and paint was going to be difficult and time consuming, I had no idea. They say you learn more from your failures than you success's. If that is true, I should know a lot. If not for the instruction and help from a few friends I really believe I would have committed "autocide" and sold the carcass for parts. When you are trying to make a car "really correct" it occurs to you that determining what "correct" is, is hard to do with any certainty. When that is done, the hunt for the correct bits and pieces begins in earnest. The good news is, I've met many fine people along the way and learned a lot. The car is done. I feel the goal of stock appearing and fast has been achieved. I've already given direction to my wife and my two sons that if I ever start down this path again they are to "intervene" with enough force to convince me to stop. The experience reminds me of basic military training. I'm glad I experienced it but, I wouldn't want to do it again.
