ROPE REAR MAIN SEAL
#1
HAS ANY ONE PUT THE OLD STYLE ROPE SEALS IN WITH ENGINE IN THE CAR? IF SO DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE I AM CONVERTING BACK SINCE I CAN'T GET A TWO PEICE LIP SEAL TO DO THE JOB I HAVE BEEN THROUGH FOUR OF THOSE SO NOW I WANT TO TRY A DIFFERENT APPROACH. I PULLED THE TRANS AFTER PUTTING DYE IN USED THE IV LIGHT AND THAT IS WHERE IT'S LEAKING I HAVE A SNEAKY PETE IS THAT WHAT I USE TO INSTALL THE ROPE SEAL AND WHAT MANUFACTURER SHOULD I USE SO I DON'T HAVE TO USE THE PIN IN THE MAIN CAP. I KNOW THERE ARE CERTAIN ONES THAT SWELL UP SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE PIN. ALSO I HAVE BEEN USING GREY SILICONE ON THE MAIN CAP I AM SWITCHING TO BLACK BECAUSE THE CONSISTENCY OF THE GREY IS LIKE LIQUID PLEASE ANY ADVICE WITH THE ROPE SEAL WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Q, don't you have a video on this?

If not, I think I will do one when I put my intake on.

Does the crank have a groove wore into it where the seal rides?

Sorry...

I always keep a couple spare mandrels laying around in my tool box just for this type of application.

And, now I know what to do with that jig I found for in the trunk of my car.

When you've changed the seal in the past was the block dry at the lifter galley and cam plugs on the back of the block. Since they are above the main seal if they "weep" oil it will look like a rear main seal leak and you can't see it unless the trans, convertor/clutch, flexplate/flywheel, and block plate are out of the way. This has happened to me twice. Just an idea to consider. Chuck

I used a dab of silicone on each end of the lip seal when it was installed. It has not leaked a drop. I have never had any luck with rope seals either on my Mustang or the Pontiacs.
