Removable Hard Top
#1
I hope I do not violate rules by placing ad for non 71-73 parts, if I do I am sure someone will let me know.
I have a couple 1965 mustang convertibles. When these cars were new you could buy a removable fiberglass hard top, NOT FORD. It was similar to the 55-57 T-bird tops. I have not seen but one in years and the only recent one I found is with a 1964 1/2 K code vert and he will not sell the top without the whole car.
There has always been a rumor that Ford made 100 prototype removable tops at the request or Iacocca. One version with just a rear window and another with a small oval side window. I do not think anyone has ever came up with documentation that it actually happened.
I WTB an original aftermarket removable hardtop if it is reasonable price and functional. They do make one version now that looks like a fastback roof when on the car but I think I would like the coupe style better so you open the trunk.
I think the only true Ford removable hard top for a Mustang was made in 1995 and would fit a 94 - 98 model. Not many were sold so they stopped with little production.
I have a couple coupe tops I cut off parts cars years ago that I might try to make something work with them. Any pictures or contacts of an owner would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

I had also posted on another forum and one of the members sent this link. Has pictures of the whole top and how it attaches and installation manual. I guess even the original manufacturer did not make too many. I might have to go buy the 64 1/2 K code to get the Towne Top. I spelled incorrect in original post.

Don,
Found one of the tops all original in great shape, white with white headliner. I am waiting on his reply with price.
Will see if it is out of my price range I will forward info it would be a great option even if it is not Ford.

Ok I closed the deal on the top in the pictures above. The tops will fit all the way through 1968 so they fit lots of cars. I was lucky again in finding one in less than a week. They say they made less than 100 and like only 10 have shown up. This one is original not redone. I have a 1965 A code 4 speed convertible that has white top so this will be for it. More projects on the never ending list. I will go pick it up next week on my next parts run up north. He even had a pair of NOS side emblems for the top.
If anyone knows of another one let me know I have a 65 with black top also.
Now back to work on garage site.

There is a guy on VMF, user name "datac" that says he has a mold and has built a couple. Also, Virginia Mustang seems to be knowledgable about the top. Just leads. Good luck

Ok thanks to Jeff I posted a thread on another Mustang Forum and did get the top. I picked it up on the same trip that I went to Grand Rapids to pick up the crashed 72 vert.
He gave me lots of pictures of other tops and cars with tops and lots of info for the components in the top. He did have a new set of side emblems for the top also.
He has Shelby convertibles and wanted to put it on a GT-500 but it would not clear the roll bar and he did not want to alter it. He claims it will fit from 1964 1/2 through 1968 Mustang convertibles.
The thing is darn heavy and I will need to set up a pulley system in the new garage for taking off and storing it. I was told 85 lbs. and the literature says 65 lbs. You need two people one on each side to walk it on the car or have it hanging from the ceiling like most do.
It will be a neat addition when the car is done and I am sure there will be lots of people saying what is it. He did have a showroom brochure and had talked to the one sales person the company had when trying to get started. He would go to all the Ford dealers and try to get them to sell from the Ford dealers.
I have spent hours on the net looking for more info and Mustang Monthly said in one of their articles that maybe 4 or 5 had been located when they wrote the article. I think this one was in that group.
I did find another one locally that he got with a car that came from Charlotte, N.C. and would not sell as a separate item.
Keep your eyes and ears open I need a black one also.
I have contacted a man in Oregon that made a mold from one of the tops and has made a few copies. His are much lighter used different ways to strengthen the top other than wood that I was told was redwood.
For now it is bagged and tagged and waiting it's turn in the too many projects file.
