Radiator overflowing
#1
I've bought a 66 F100 with a 390FE in it. Just started missing around with it because I've finished the 72 Mach 1. I've never driven it but I've cranked it up many times. Today, I put antifreeze in it and cranked it up and ran it for 10 or so minutes. No problems what so ever. An hour later I went and cranked it up and let it idle for 10 or so minutes while I was checking the lights. It started spitting water out the overflow. It didn;t seem hot and according to the temperature gauge, it wasn't hot. There was no steam. The water outlet has a new gasket like the thermostat might have been changed. The radiator looks like it might have stop leak in it. No water in the oil. What do you think? Clogged radiator?

If there is stop leak in the radiator I would first try and flush it out. I had a 94 Jeep with a leaky heater core and put stop leak in it. Big mistake.

drive it like you stole it

After I cut the truck off. The water was still pulsing out the overflow. That would make me think it's an overheating problem.

Did you burp the air out after you filled it with coolant?

My Mach 1 did that when I first bought it. Turned out there was no thermostat in it. After I'd shut it off it would pee about a liter of antifreeze onto the ground.

If it burps out while running it may be a head gasket.

I too have a 66 F-100. Has the original 352 even though the guy I bought it from said it was a 390. Two others I've come across had sworn theirs had a 390 but turned out to be a 352 finding out the same way I did. Are you sure yours is a 390? Just asking...

Mike

No, I'm not sure. It has 390 emblems on the front fender but I didn't think 390's came out in that truck. I bought the truck for the body. I was told that the motor and transmission came out of a 68 mustang. It has the 4 speed toploader in it. It never burped out any water before. I drained the radiator because it was just water and now it's burping it out while it's running and after you shut it off. I though head gasket too but I didn't think it would burp it out after you shut it off if it was the head gasket.
Today, I filled it back up with water and let it run with the radiator cap off. It started slowly burping out water but once it got 190 degrees, I reckon the thermostat opened and it stoped burping up water. I filled it back up and put the cap back on and let it run for 4 or 5 more minutes and it never burped out water. When I cut it off, it didn't burp out water. I wonder if it's what Totalled said, the air needed to be burped out.

Sounds like you solved the problem. Just info, the first year for 390 in a F-100 was 1967, you were right. Chuck

To Bleed Air out of a motor after a termostat replacement loosen the heater hose to the intake manifold, pore in coolant untill it leaks out of the manifold. this bleeds the air out of the system.

Yes, that's it. I have to do that everytime I refill the coolant in my F-100.

1968. 1967s F-100-F350 had the 352 as the only V8 option.
