Question on a Possible purchase

I have the opportunity to pick one up very cheap. It is partly completed. All other parts are still in original packaging. It sits on a '79 pinto frame with a 2.3L 4cyl and 4 speed. Car is complete enough that it runs and drives. Is it worth the $400 to snag it up and complete it and flip it? The fiberglass is good, shiny and no cracks. It does need quite a bit to complete but all parts are there and still in packaging with the instructions. It is light tan and brown as seems to be a popular color combo for these. Thoughts?

It was noisy with the fiberglass body but surprisingly snappy.

I'm only looking to see if I can make some easy money finishing it up and flipping it.

Looks like ebay is asking from 5 to 15K. Getting it licensed might be the hardest part. You would think that $400 would leave you some room to make a profit, although given that's all they are asking makes you wonder.

He wants it out of his way. He got the car for free scrapping out a guys machine shed. I was hoping to have maybe 75-100 hours into finishing it and sell it for about $5-7k.

seems like a fun project to me. Consider that the lowly 2.3 engine has evolved into a pretty stout 4 cylinder racing motor over the years, you could do some neat stuff with that car.

I'd do it for sure.  thumb

Sure, it's an older kit car - but the quality of materials these days can be worked into the mix.  For instance, some 'mat sound deadener or Lizard Skin could go a LONG way toward eliminating the old squeaks and rattles that came 'out of the box' with these kits, along with urethane bushings, better fasteners, etc.  Not to mention upgrading things like suspension components and even engine/tranny technology like Jeff mentioned.

I think the biggest difference between a crap kit car and a good kit car is the build - if a half-assed job is done, then a half-assed car is born.  You're not a half-assed kind of guy, so I think it will be cool & fun project, and if you sell it, you'd make some money.  Go for it!

If you have the time and space to work on it, I would go for it. Over the years I've fixed up a few cars and always made a profit.

Do you know if the engine and transmission were rebuilt or if the engine was upgraded? Knowing that can really help the resale.

Whatever you do, make sure to get a set of 'real' wire wheels with some whitewalls.  The wire hubcaps just look cheap, and any other wheels just look weird on that body.

Looks like it's going to be a blast, though.  Good luck!

Ha too funny. The kit came with real wire wheels and knock offs. They are still in the plastic.
