question on 72 conv
#1
hello everyone. i am a huge mustang guy but have never really owned a 71-73 years. a buddy of mine went to look at a 1972 conv 4spd 351c, power top. he says the engine code was Q. He said the car was a 4brl and it had ram air. I know Q code is 351c cobra jet. but i also know you could not get a ram air that year for the Q code. People have added it on. I was told only around 200 of these car were made. my buddy went with a different car ad know i am thinking about maybe buying it. guy wants 3000 firm on the car. any one have any info on numbers for this car? how many built and thinkgs

The "ram air" option WAS available with the 351C 4V (Q Code) in 1972. It was in 1973 when the ram air option was not available with the 4V.

There were 10, 249 Q-Coded Mustangs built in 1972.

3,141 were built with wide ratio 4-speeds (344 Hard Tops; 2,596 Fastbacks; and 201 Convertibles).

7,108 were built with C6 transmissions (697 Hard Tops; 6,081Fastbacks; and 330 Convertibles)

There were 2,180 1972 Mustangs built with the ram air hood (306 Hard Tops; 1,796 Fastbacks; and 78 Convertibles).

Based on the above, it appears this is a relatively RARE ConvertibleSmile.

Does it run?

How loud is it?

What is the rust to good metal ratio?

$3k sounds too reasonable if the drive train is in good shape. Who cars about the hood?

i hope to see the car tomorrow, but with it being Christmas so soon its going to be hard to go look at it. from what i was told it is a solid car. it does need a top and the exterior is in need of some work. the interior is in need of work to.

It's a mustang convertible, if the frame rails are solid and it runs, it's worth that all day every day

I wish I could have had access to the info everyone offers on production numbers and advice on this site when I first tried to find a 351 CJ 4 speed convertible! I thought I was pretty fortunate to find a 73 with the right drivetrain but the 72 sounds even more rare. I agree with the others: if the frame and torque boxes are good, it sounds like a bargain.

I think I've seen that car on eBay a month or two ago. Maybe it's a different one tho.

I agree with everyone else...check for rust very carefully.

at $3000 if the rust is managable, I would get it.
