Hey all just joined the forums. I bought this car over a little a year ago, and ended up blowing a rod on the freeway shortly after... since then I've torn the whole car/engine down and found alot of nasty body damage. Ill try to post as many pics as I can. Being a poor college kid I have no choice but to work in stages. My initial idea was start from the engine compartment (structural repair/front suspension/engine) just to get it driving again. The suspension mount points and frame appear to be badly rusted and I'm scared to just throw it all together, take a turn and have some rusted metal collapse. Alot of the metal work is far more advanced than I can do so I'm looking for some input on some reputable shops in the Charlotte area.

First of all welcome from Washington State. You'll have a nice 71 once you get it back together, looks like one of those projects you wish you would have just not unwrapped, the more you unwrap the more you find. Good luck, you found the right site for advise.

Sweet..I love the left qtr panel ...with all the holes drilled for a slide hammer..Now thats some serious hack work ! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your looking at some serious $$$ At a quality shop to put that car right..Not a car for some one on a budget..Not sure what you paid but for the money your going to spend to put that car right..You can buy one in much better condition that needs a lot less work..Your looking EASY 10k just in structural work, & thats what you can see..Wait till you get into it..there's a bunch of hidden damage too...I thought mine was bad but yours tops mine..

I wonder how long it took to blast that amount of filler away? I remember sanding with a DA for 30 minutes on my passenger door and never The guy who had the shop laughed at me and told me to go get some rest he would finish up. He called me to apologize the next morning because it took him another 45 minutes to hit metal. Once all filler was gone ther was a 1 inch scrath in the metal! Someone used a ton of filler for nothing! Whoever did the work formed the body line perfectly and adjusted the fender out to match up. Of course hood gap was way wider on passenger side. We set it all correct then two years later I totaled the car.

I agree...Unless your just nuts about this very car...I would take most of your good parts and start hunting for a better shell..Your hood looked nice in the picture..And how are the doors?..I would take the hood...All them nice dash peices..gutt your car of every good peice it has..Including the middle console and interior...And just pick up a nice clean shell of a car..Fast back mustang shells of our years or mach 1's come realy cheap...I would say 1500ish for a very clean strait body...Heck it even looks like the original red floor mats built into the carpet...Or them some kinda replacements?...I would take that carpet out too if those are original .....Those where color keyed too each mach 1's paint.

awww i seen a few of them float threw on craigs list...But i didnt need them...One was in yakima for 2,000...It was in primer..came with a motor and trans not in the car thou.....and looked pretty much stripped and ready for some love...lol...One was in a shop but i didnt go look at it..But it looked to be in primer too..and strait...Ill keep my eyes peeled for ya...Down where i live is the one of the best place for picking up mach 1 bodies...Sence the lack of humidity...I live in a desert...I know some think washington is the evergreen state...Well my part is more like cali desert..lol

And i not talking perfict..But i seen some real good bodies roll threw for 1500 too 2000...Primer...with hardly no interior and maybe some mutt equipment to go with them...Much better than the car this guy is dealing with now...I couldnt imagine starting out with that much rust....Its sad too see that...Cause im sure he realy likes the car alot or he wouldnt be going threw all this trouble.
