Paint gun advice
#1
I'm in the market for a new paint gun. I'll use it to paint 1 or maybe 2 cars per year spraying primers, base coat/cleat coat applications. Looking for a decent gun that tends to limit orange peel.

Recommendations/What should I get?
Are there any decent guns in the $300-400 range?

Thanks,
Don

I'm not sure of a gun that will be able to do all of those things unless you get different size tips. I just got this gun http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?...ir=catalog through school to do the base and clear coats. My dad has an old primer gun we're going to use. I don't know of the quality of my new gun as I haven't used it yet. And like will e said buy yourself a good respirator.

I figured one of the forum jokers would pop up and say something like that. Big Grin

The sprayee can only compensate so much for a poor quality sprayer & my Harbor Freight sprayer is about as cheap as they come.

We sell Iwata guns at work (LKQ/Keystone Automotive). Unfortunately, I am not well versed in what makes a good gun, well, good. The body shop guys unanimously report to me "Iwata = good". I see no problem in acquiring a good gun for your target price.
The last I painted an overall was about 20 years ago using lacquer primer and black DuPont Centari paint. And, yes, I primed and painted with the same Binks suction gun.

Definitely need 3 guns (or tips) to spray this newfangled "PolyBaseEuroUrethaneWaterborneHardenerReducerRetarderAccelerator" stuff. Could probably "get away" with not having the best primer gun for shooting filler/primer. Follow the paint manufacturers HVLP hardware/spraying/mixing directions to a T, and you should be fine.

Want the Best ? Then buy a sata jet $$$$$...But for primers & all around use I use a home depot husky hvlp gun I bought for like 59.95 WORKS GREAT !! For that money you could buy 2 keep one for primer only & one for paint work. Surprised the hell out of me (I do have sata jets that I used when I did this everyday for a living) For your use try one might surprise you !

Don,
Thanks for the compliment !
It is a deal I originally bought it to spray the underside & interior of the stang with rust bullet..I was thinking it was a throwaway ..Ended up spraying the epoxy primer & was really impressed ! Then I did a set of motorcycle tanks & used it for the clear worked really good again ! I haven't sprayed any base coat with it yet but I don't see why it wouldn't work just as good..You can get some different tips but the best thing to do is get an old hood or fender & play around spraying different materials..with different tips..I haven't changed the tip so & the tip that comes with it works well for primers & clears..Again at that price at least you will have a proven good gun for spraying primers at the bare minimum.
