Our First Big Show & Swap in South

I just got in from spending Thursday, Friday and part of today at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The show/swap meet has gotten out of control. There is no way to walk this show in three or four days. Everything is so mixed up for sure like finding a needle in a haystack. I did find a 429 clutch fork, bell housing and engine plate for someone that buys parts from me. They are not cheap for sure but out there.
I went back to get a set of 1973 aluminum wheels for $100 but they did not come back today. Didn't need them was just going to sell them.
Not many of the 71-73 cars there. I thought that Mustangs had been banned or something. Found out they were mostly up inside the main straight bleachers inside. It was 35 deg. this morning and winds in the 40 + MPH. It was darn cold. Everything is getting so expensive. Did not buy anything but some Motocraft spark plugs. Guy had cases of AF-42 and BF-42 for $1.00 per plug so I got 20 of them. Here are some pics.

The auction was just getting going when I left it was like a wind tunnel under the big tent they had put up a Boss 302 was rolling up as I left. They had just sold one of Hendrix cars for $67,000 a vet.
The track is 1 1/2 miles and the entire track was covered all the way around with two rows of cars for sale. I am still not warm.
The Boss 9 was a fake and he wanted $85,000 sounded good. You could buy any engine you desired from 427 side oilers down.
Now I remember why I quit going to the swap meets. Wind was taking down canopies and blowing stuff all around. The $8.00 hot dogs were still no good, lol. Did get to sign up for the free 2016 GT Mustang give away Ford had going on. Those Coyote engines are amazing. Looked at the cut away showing the CNC cut heads and they would crank one up and rev to the 8,500 limit, screaming. The valves and runners are sooo tiny. Here we want to grind the runners larger on the old Clevelands and the tech boys are making them smaller and making the valves lighter so you can use lighter springs and get the revs up. It has a switch that changes all the setttings on the engine and it makes two completely different sounds both pretty loud for a stock engine. One of our members is putting one in his car now will be good to hear it running when finished.
Now I can start back to work on my daily driver next week and get it going.
Oh a little trivia. If you notice in the pictures of the track the seats in the stands are different colors. This is to fool people that watch the race on TV. So few people go to the races they put the seats different colors to make it look like there were people there. If they were all just white it looked empty. They also took about 1/3 of the seats out around the first and second turn took them all down. Nobody can afford to go anymore.

David, that's one of the things I miss by not living in SC anymore. Used to go the Spring and Fall shows. Now they charge for parking, admission is higher, and most of the parts and cars pricing is crazy. Yep, hot dog and a coke and $10.00 is gone!! Last few I went to was just to look at the cars and visit some Venders I knew. If time permitted we tried to visit Dennis Carpenters which was close to the track. One day and I was done. My 427 Fairlane buddy who claimed his health was so bad, would go up there for the entire four days! He was always on the search for 427 parts and would come back with a notebook full of numbers from all the "Finds" from there. It's all about the $$ to the track now. One of my vender friends said they are not allowed to sell T-shirts or caps. The track was selling them at the track concession stands!! They've got to make up the money lost on all those empty seats David! Big Grin

Did you look at the pictures of the 427 Fairlane. It was an S code on the plate but still really nice car. The 427 side oiler blocks I saw looked like some we would have thrown away in past years. Looked like they have been buried in the ground for years, lol.

A good friend and I used to go to this event and spend the night. The first year we went, probably 15 or 20 years ago, it was a swap meet to go to. Our first visit to the swap meet, one of the first things I remember running across, that was special, was a Shelby 9 inch 2 speed rear end. It had everything there for $1500.00. Like, dang it. Not enough money at the time. Have not seen one since!! We stopped going probably some 7 or 8 years ago due to the junk meet it has become. Too much non related auto parts there. Plus, too expensive.

Agree that if you lived in the South, and only went to one show a year, this was the one to do. Originally the prices on parts and cars were reasonable. After the first trip, we learned not to go there in a car, as we couldn't fit all our new found loot in the car and not leave someone behind. The car prices were reasonable enough that several in our group bought many cars over the years.
The 2 speed 9" differential reminds me of an article I remember reading on a 1970 428 Cougar Eliminator. Ford had actually built some running prototype Cougar's with the two speed differential. It was a Dana/Ford jointly designed system that was cable operated by a lever beside the drivers seat. Don't remember the ratios, but I believe the cruising gear was around 2:75 and the "Lets Go" side was around 4:11-4:30. I remember the test drivers remarking about cruising with no high RPM engine noise, but also having the ability to annihilate any stop light challengers. For some reason Ford never put the system into production. Don't know if it was a cost or durability issue. I had contacted the Sterling axle plant (Ford's axle and differential plant) but couldn't find anyone old enough to remember that far back!!
David, if you happen to go there when the International Mercury Owners Association is there, go look at their cars. One of the members has a 64 Mercury Marauder with a SOHC 427! Defiantly has the under the hood wow factor.

I remember seeing the two speed rears in the auto magazines from the day. It was not really a new idea. My dad had a 1935 Ford Roadster Flathead V-8 with a Columbia two speed rear. It was built into the R.H. part of the rear end housing if I remember correct. Had something on the engine also related to it. He out ran everybody in this area with the car back then. With growing family he sold it and I think got a Hudson Terraplane but came back to Ford pretty quick. That car ended up in scrap yard it would be worth a fortune today. It was a special order car by the owner of Millers Laundry in Hendersonville and came from factory with Chrome Spoke wheels. I always told dad that was one he should have kept for sure.
I have found lots of neat stuff and at good prices at the Charlotte show you just have so much area to cover. I have a pair of 1950 Ford parking light housings that are the extremely rare BRASS. The rumor was that Ford had an issue making them out of the steel that was available and used brass until they got correct material. I paid $5.00 for them and a couple other steel housings also. I need to put them on eBay but will have to find first, lol. I also bought NOS parking light housings in the box there in fact got the entire grill for 1950 Ford NOS.

I believe if you could spend multiple days there you would have a better chance of finding deals. Between the main track and the auxiliary area outside the main show area there was a mind numbing amount of cars and parts for sale. I could only last about a day and I was done for.
David, since you have some NASCAR ties, you may already have knowledge of this. I saw a trailer full of what a man claimed was old Holman-Moody engines and parts. He had a 494 CID Boss 429 style engine that was a Ford built Can-AM engine and he ONLY wanted $10,000.00!! As you can imagine all his stuff was pretty much out of my price range, but he was nice to talk to.
Strangely enough there seemed to be a lot of NOS flat head V8 parts available there. About 10 years ago our Blue Oval Compliance coordinator went with us and found a NEW set of flat head cylinder heads with the Ford tag from the Atlanta parts depot still attached! But...when he found and bought his dream car Dusk Rose 57 T-Bird, he sold all his flat head cars and parts and never looked back! LOL

They still make a lot of the flathead stuff never really went away. Edelbrock makes heads and intakes. So many like them for period correct street rods. Back in the 60's when I hot rodded them parts were really cheap. I sold my last set of Jahn's racing flathead pistons this past year to a guy in Texas. They were pretty special .1875" overbore was about your limits without sleeves out into the head bolt holes and then recut the threads. These were .030" over .1879" plus stroker and for a blower. He was so happy to find them he already had a set of piston rings for them. Cost me $10.00 in the 60's from Honest Charley's on close out and I sold for $320.
The French military actually used the Ford flathead in their military vehicles until into the 60's because it was so dependable and simple. They banned the French blocks in racing in the U.S. because they were so good. I think Summit sold them in the 80's.
One thing Ford did to prevent people from over reving them was kept the crank way out of balance. When you balanced one I think Roger told me you had to get about 5 lbs. off of the rotating assembly. You had to almost take half the rod cap off. I have not checked in years to see what the current record at Bonneville but was over 200 when I was a kid. Not bad for 239 C.I.. I spent three full days at Charlotte this year and was totally beat no telling how many miles I walked. Gal friend was going back to hotel and got lost in parking lot I had to walk out find her find the car and then walk back in and go for another 5 hours. You need to train for that show, lol.
