Original Seats??
#1
I'm just trying to determine if these seats are original upholstery or not. I believe they are the correct color as my trim code is GW which is for the white comfortweave vinyl/fabric seats. However I am not sure if these were replacement repro covers or original. How can I be sure?

If I look at the comfort weave material inserts, the seats look original to me. The colour is gray/white due to the fact it is woven material. The reproduction comfort weave is imprinted in the vinyl so the colour would be more white than your seats. The Mach 1 owners will be able to give you more info !

I'd wager they are not original, only because from what I see, that's a Deluxe interior, and the factory seat 'buttons' are missing from the deluxe seat covers.

I've also never seen a set of white covers exactly like that before as well, so I admit I'm pretty much guessing here. whistling

It is the original pattern for the White Knit vinyl comfortweave (found a 1972 sales manual online) but I also noticed the "seat button" in various pictures on the net. I haven't been able to find any other cars with the GW code interior trim though. The button is what made me wonder along with the number of horizontal rows in the seat back. Seems like some cars have more rows but I'm not sure if their seats are original or repro either so it's really hard to tell.

Also as shown on my Marti report this seemed to be kind of a rare color combination. There were only 184 total cars with a white exterior and this GW interior. Now I'm not sure how many Mustang's altogether were ordered with a different exterior color and the GW interior but like I said it's been hard to find any examples online.

I literally pulled the seat buttons from my original sport seats (since there were still nice) and transferred them to the new TMI upholstery when I redid them.

Hopefully, someone will have some better info for you. thumb

They look very original to me. Hopefully someone with a trim and upholstery book from Ford will be able to tell you if it is.
The comfortweave looks great!

So are those buttons just glued on or do they actually make a hole through the vinyl? I think with those buttons the seats would definitely look original.

ITMike5.0, those are close to the original but are not as it left the factory. The trim piping on your seats are larger than the original and as discussed above the chrome button on the seat back is missing which usually indicates a replacement seat cover. The seat with a "GW" code also had a grey/silver insert. There again it is your car and if your not going to concours level restore her, then I'd set my tail in those seats and ride! The all white is different and looks good!

They have prongs on the back and punch through the vinyl, and have some backing plates with push-on retainer nuts that go on the inside to keep them secure.

Here's one of my old original seats:

And here are the new ones with the buttons transferred (TMI Sport Seat II - thicker bolster... much more comfortable, still look "pretty much" stock, although the center section is not genuine comfort weave material - stamped repop material and obviously not the right color):

I don't even care about the slight difference in details, though - I love the 'new' seats.

Those creases in the covers have since relaxed quite a bit as well - that was my first time redoing upholstery... and might be the last time as well (I have a whole new respect for those who can do upholstery, that's for sure).

Your seats look very nice! I can imagine what a pain doing the upholstery is and thats probably why seat cover shops charge so much to do it.

I thought I've read where some people redid their seats and they lost head room in there but didnt know if it was because of using the more sportier seat vs the stock one.

I'm assuming you also changed the seat foams when you did the covers?

Does redoing the seat change the height and head clearance at all?
