opinion on exhaust
#1
I am still deployed in Kuwait, and have about another three months to go...I have decided that I am going to re-use as much as I can from my 69 Cougar for exhaust, which in this case is 2 inch pipe, with purple hornies mufflers. (My 71 mustang FB has a stock 302, with headers and a new Holley 600, that is the extent of the mods I will do to the car.)

My question is,
does the 71-73 Mustang look good with side exiting exhaust? I know that I will have to cut the exhaust off my 69, and was thinking I could swap it over, and then run a 90 degree bend out in front of the tires, to try and save maybe a few bucks.
Anybody got pictures?

I haven't seen any like that. Back in the day, to save a few bucks on a '65 Mustang I had, I ran the exhaust straight out of the mufflers and turned them down right in fron of the rear axle, to keep heat off the axle.

I don't know how it would look but what you described was similar to the 1965 Shelby GT-350. http://www.cobranda.com/19shgtorstex.html Chuck

That's about what I was thinking of, just different glass packs. I haven't figured out how to remove the over the axle tubing, with out removing the axle..For the effort, it's faster cheaper to just get new tubes. But in my case, if I cut the exhaust I have before they head over the axle, I can either just put a down pipe "dump" on them, or add a 90 and send them out the side. I like the way they sound with the side exhaust, but I don't know how it will look.
I guess I will figure it out when I get back to Idaho....

Deployed?

Kuwait?

Can you send over some cheap gasoline? How much is a gallon of gas in Kuwait?

One of our members on here has a car with the exhaust exiting in front of his tires. I remember the pic from his intro thread...seems like he lives in Europe. I thought it looked good.

Thank you for your service!

If you can raise the car up, disconnect the shocks and support the car by the frame you might get enough axle drop to get the pipes out intact. Even if you have to pull the shackles loose, it'd be worth it.

Thanks for the support! I am in a pretty safe spot...
I haven't seen the price of fuel on the economy, but the exchange rate here sucks. One USD buys .28 Kuwati Dinar.
My automobile "problem" has helped me occupy many hours while I have been deployed. Besides the Mustang, I am working on a 1967,1968 and 1969 cougar. My 68 is currently giving me fits as well. I just got done putting a new set of Edelbrock heads on it, and I think I have a valve that is just hanging open a bit, and backfiring thru the carb. I have an engine build waiting to happen for that now 302. My 69 is in for paint, (finally!!!!) and I need to build that motor, (351W) and swap in my T5. As I mentioned in my intro thread, I had enough stuff laying around that I thought I could get the mustang going for a WHOLE lot less headache than what it has been.
If any body finds a picture with a side exhaust, I'd like to see how it would look, otherwise it will probably just get the dumps in front of the rear axle...

I also love Cougars. No one expects them to be fast and they have great lines, especially the 1969 but, I'm biased a bit. Chuck
