Next question deals with my transmission!
As I'm slowly getting things together to hopefully start this car this summer, I'm thinking about my transmission. The car has been off the road for 17+ years and I've been told the transmission (C4 automatic) has been sitting in the trunk for some time now. I never did any transmission work or ever had to for that matter. I'm wondering what effects if any did this lack of use have on it? Should I take it to a shop and ask them to go over it and refresh it?

i'm not a trans person by no means. i'd say if u are rebuilding the engine then do the same with trans. i've removed a trans with the engine in car and i hate it.. pain in butt. but if u have a lift that should make it a lot easier... i don't have one.
Get a shop to refresh it. Since you already got it out it should be under $500 for an overhaul.

I'll agree that since it's out, have it rebuilt. No sense in putting the whole thing back together to find out the trans is shot.

I checked with someone who posted on CL, told me $850 to refresh it! A bit steep I thought.
Personally, I wouldn't use someone from CL. If I were to need someone, it would be a known quality business that stands behind their work, and with a transmission or engine, that has a nation-wide warranty. I know that there are people who advertise on CL who know what they're doing and do good work, but there's also scammers at work, who'll take your money and give you back a non-functional unit. If I want a crap shoot it'll be at a casino where I know the odds. $850 isn't that bad for a well built automatic transmission, though. A good quality master ovethaul kit can run over $300.

$850 isn't too bad for built transmission, that's what I paid for mine. Worth every dollar!

I agree on getting a nationally well known shop to give me a quote as well. If his quote was a good amount lower it might be worth taking a chance to save some coin. If he's the same price I would take it to a transmission shop. If I do have a problem I want a written warranty. Maybe the $850 quote wasn't bad but all I end up with is his word on it being done right.
If you're feeling adventurous, you could always rebuild it yourself. Heck, I did my first one (a C-4) in the kitchen of my apartment at college.   Angel


Best place I know of is Dynamic in Branford, CT. They are pretty much the kings of the racing C-4 and do stock rebuilds as well. They also did the 4L80E in my Silverado.
