Magnum 500 Correct Black Paint
#1
I need to touch up the black on the Magnums I have. Does anyone know the "correct" color to paint the recesses? I know what you smarties want to say, but black isn't always black. Especially in the automotive world.

With the originals I have, the black appears to be a flat black when cleaned and polished. But the center caps have the gloss looking black in the center.

Thanks for the help!

Hi KC,

America has it's own special paint brands which differ from Australian paints to some degree, but when i find the need to touch my 500 rims up, i'll more than likely use a pre mixed satin black 2pak enamel for durability, and shoot it through a spraygun.

For ease of use, you could go a satin black from a pressure pak spray can in lacquer or fast dry enamel. What ever you choose, satin black is the go i think.I couldn't find any official paint on the net for these rims per say, but i slipped in a couple of links to help steer you in the right direction. The satin black is or would be a couple of levels of gloss above the flat black, just enough to give a slight lustre appearence to the finish instead of a dead flat black look. The centre caps is what they is, and stay glossy looking.

Also, do consider a stencil kit to make masking easier for your finished paint job.Hope that helps............................

I use SEM "trim black". It has a smooth matte finish. Looks exactly right to me. Flat black makes the wheels look too dull, and glossy black just makes 'em look like crap and "repainted".

I had mine powder coated...they did like a 40% gloss on them...turned out great. Not too overdone.

Has anyone painted the backside center of the Magnums? If so what do you recommend? Thanks

I would probably try to replicate a natural finish. Eastwood has some good ones. I would be afraid to blast that surface to prep for fear of damaging the chrome - even though it is on the back side of the wheel. My second choice would be the same black used for the outside mentioned earlier in this thread.

Finally remembered....this is after powder coat and sand blasting. Just haven't gotten around to getting them polished again. But not bad for 40+ year rims. Big Grin
