mach 1 nasa hood help
#1
Hi Guys,
This is my first post.
I was looking for a chevy Nova last week and ended up buying a mustang.
I suppose you could say it was a bit of an inpulse buy.
I hope it does not bite me in the back side. Seemed like a great deal.
Its a 1973 mach 1 mustang.
I know most of you guys might laugh but its ONLY a numbers matching 302 2V version.
Yes I know a 351 would have been great but this just had 15k resto on it and was numbers matching so I bought it.
I have never even owned a FORD in my life. I prey when it arrives in Australia its as described.

Anyway it does not have the NASA hood. I believe that was an option like so many other other things you could have had ordered with a mach 1. It does have front and rear spoilers and decals and racing mirrors and so on but I want the NASA hood.
Where can I source a NASA hood from.I prefer a metal type.
I have heard horror stories about reproduction types that dont fit.
Who may have some info for me.
I also may need a stencil kit and some inserts.
I was thinking maybe to source one and have it put in the container with the car to help with postage charges.
Any info apprecaited.
Regards

Welcome from coastal Alabama. Impulse buy or not I think you made the correct decision. There are lots of go fast goodies for 302s. Try OMS Mustang on here. I've heard lots of good things about the NASA hoods he carries.

Post some pics when you get a chance.

Hi Aus,

Welcome aboard to the site from another fellow Aussie!
Everyone loves pics if you have any to post up on the site.BTW
what city do you hale from in Australia. You might have noticed there's several Aussie guys also who are forum memebers as well.

302! Don't sweat it. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. I'm running a spiced up 302 in my '73 convert and it's all good and go go gadget!

About the Nasa hood.Go metal young man! Finding a genuine one would be a challenge to say the least. You're cheapest bet would be to try and include a repo one in with your shipment to Oz if you can. To source one, there are guys on this site who would be happy to help you there i think.

The other option would be to deal with local Australian Mustang parts import companies like i did. (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide etc )They will have stock - you buy local, but you will be paying around $650.00 Aussie Dollers for the hood.
That's what i did, and i recently fitted and painted the hood myself for my '73 convertible. I had to monkey around with the fit here and there, but i got a fairly good looking end result. I'd say go for it.

I was going to go the stencil kit when i sprayed the satin black center piece, but decided against it. My research came up with accurate measurements for the layout, and i did my own markup and layout and got a knockout end result. But the stencil kit is there i guess to make it all easy for folks to do the job. If i can help any further, let me know.

Hope all that helps Aus!

Thanks for the info guys.
As requested here are some pics.
Still sitting in Boston I believe.

Also has anyone heard of DYNACORN nasa hoods.
Are they all metal.
They are only $360 and if I could put that in the container it would work out well. Has anyone had any trouble fitting one of them.

Hi ausmach1, welcome from Bendigo from another 302 2V non-nasa-hood Mustang owner!

When you're driving down the road looking out through a slitted gun-turret windscreen over a 40 foot long bonnet, believe me you won't be disappointed in your choice of car.

One thing; if your car has a stock two-barrel carby and manifold, then swap it out for a four-barrel. I did this to mine and it made a fairly significant addition to the across-the-range engine power.

G'Day from W.A. welcome to the forum, Very clean an sharp looking Mach1, As Mr Flatback said, a 4 brl manifold and carb, will give that 302 some get up an go, also headers/extractors and a free flowing exhaust, if it hasn't already...
