Ignition switch question
#1
My ignition switch feels gummed up and sometimes has to be physically moved back after the car is started. I notice this more now because of the cold weather when I periodically start it.
Would spraying a cleaner in the keyhole free it up, or am I looking at a new switch? It seems to work ok during the summer months, it just feels real stiff and like it needs to be de-greased.

This problem is usually in the actual switch, which is separate from the key/ignition lock cylinder and located on top of the steering column under the dash. It is activated by a rod that runs from the ignition key cylinder to the switch. The return spring is in the switch. The switches get corroded, gummed up, and the contact and return springs rust and fail. The switch isn't all that expensive and it makes sense to replace it rather than dropping the column to get to the switch, trying to spray it (which is unlikely to help), and having to lower it again when it doesn't help.

The "rack and pinion" at the top of the column, that moves the rod that moves the switch, tend to gum up after this many years and cause a lot of "stick".
This link may help. Chuck http://www.mustangandfords.com/parts/mum...g-columns/
