How can you tell if the center gauges are original?
#1
Hello,

My 73 vert has some serious electrical issues under the dash which I'm going to be addressing in the next few days. I'm wondering if there's any way to tell if a car came originally from the factory with the center gauges or if they were added later. Is there a surefire way to tell? I have so many splices and wires that go nowhere under my dash I'm beginning to wonder. As it sits it has a tach next to the speedo, and the gauges in the center. The ammeter isn't working, the dash lights are out, and other problems. But for now I'm just trying to figure out what was original and if the PO spliced the heck out of things in order to add the center gauges and/or tach? I do have the Marti report.

On your marti report....It should show interior De'cor Group...And Console...And Air conditioner...Atleast that is what im seeing just from looking at your dash and deluxe interior...Its set up just like mine....If that all matches your marti report...should be original...That is should..lol

just looked at your report.....Maybe part of the appearence protection group? It shows Air Conditioning..So thats right on your controlls.....But on my report....It shows console..and Interior Decor group...They mite label them diffrent on a vert?

To answer your basic question: the housing for the gauges is made of plastic and is not reproduced. If the three gauge faces are similar in design and color, the chances are close to 100% that the center gauge cluster is original. The next question is: did the car originally come with the three center gauges? I believe that if your car originally came with a tachometer in the dash, the center three gauges were part of that package.

Your car looks pretty well optioned - good chance they were factory

It would be difficult to tell. Mine did NOT come with the guages (Tach/center console) but I did an excellent job of swapping them in and avoided splices. Instead I swapped the wires in the connectors. The only tell tale sign is the ampmeter was wired different than the light. Amp Meters used a shunt that is not used for the idiot light.

When I bought the car last month it came with a stack of old receipts. In their I found receipts from the early 90's from a wrecking yard for things like door panels ($10 ea), clock ($3), small gauge ($3), large console ($15) etc. So I don't know if this was to repair or upgrade.

Ah, the life of trying to decipher the work of several PO's over a 40 year period!

Scott,

I would say that your gauges were probably not original to your vehicle. There is no mention of the instrumentation group or the interior decor group on your Marti report. With all of the splices you are seeing and that fact that your ammeter is not working (most folks would not know how to hook those up correctly), it points to the gauges/tach being installed after the car was built.

Yeah, I would tend to agree.

I had a great call with Midlife today and it looks like I'm going to be sending in my harnesses for repair and/or replacement. I didn't share the pics of the splicing since it's not for the faint of heart.

Oh heck, here you go!

Still okay? Here's another

Starting to feel sick? Here's the tach connection

Wish me (and Midlife) luck!

BTW, if you haven't had the pleasure of talking with Midlife, he's a great guy and very knowledgeable!

Yeah, we had a good conversation. Yes, I could repair his harness, but in the long-run, it would be easier for me to simply replace it with a much better tach harness and repair and refurbish that rather than spend 3+ hours repairing the damage here and then refurbishing it. The cost of the PO's JY components is a mind-blower: those are way lower than what would be expected, even in the late 80's.

Monterey has several problems he's experienced with the existing wiring and it simply isn't worth the effort to trouble-shoot it with that mess of hack-ness. Let this be a warning to all of you: at least look at the wiring before you purchase what you think is a good car. Q: you paying attention? *G*

Anyway, I look forward to helping Monterey out. He'll be much happier with a known, functioning wiring system, I guarantee it![/Men's Clothing Store Owner's Voice]
