Help - Valve Stem Seal replacement height issue
#1
Gurus,

I swapped the valve stems seals on my 1970's 302 without issue. I used Comp-Cams 502-16 http://www.jegs.com/i/COMP-Cams/249/502-16/10002/-1 valve stem seal. Made a world of difference. Smoke = almost none.
On my 1969 Torino's 351W I'm doing the same with the same valve stem seals but the ones I'm removing are a tad taller. When pushed all the way down there is a slight gap. I'm assuming this is a big deal but can't find any literature that tells me otherwise. See pic, what do you all think?
The one on the right is the old, cracked one. The one on the left is the new one. Disregard the white color, it's black but has some powder coating on it.
Jegs and Summitt say the Comp-Cam 502 will fit or is universal but I'd rather not go through the pain of finding out after I pull all the springs. The diameter (inner) is spot on. The old one is definitely the original stock.
It's stamped (in plastic) FordMOCO and is marked with C7OE-D IA and M2D7O-B. The only Internet reference is a guy with an old Bronco that found plastic pieces in his oil pump filter. Oh yeah, I HIGHLY recommend you swap these out. Cylinder #1's exhaust valve stem seal was in three pieces when I got the spring out.

You can use the FMC catalog information to get the specs you need.

Mustang7173,

A sincere thanks. After I posed I eventually found the D2AZ-6571-A posting and ebay ad but definitely not the parts catalog listing. The valve stem seals looks identical so I'm sure that's what I need. Odd that they are coded a later date (72 vs 69), but I'm sure it's just a NOS part number. I may end up getting these. The price isn't that bad.

I appreciate you doing the homework here, that's what makes this site so great.

If you have the smaller valve stem seal boss under the spring, I use these seals from FelPro #SS72683. They are used on the late 302 V-8 1997-2001 Explorers. They seal very well and are about the best type of valve seal you can get because emissions was getting tighter and tighter those years for the old 302. I installed them on my 85 GT and the 302 in my old F-250 with great results. They fit tight onto the valve guide boss and don't just flop around like the umbrella seals do.

Rock Auto has the best prices on them.
