Handling on a budget
#1
With a budget of $1000 what is the best kit out there for increased handling?

Assume 18x8 front wheels and 18x9.5 rears.

Thanks!

What are you starting with? Are any suspension components new or are you starting from ground zero?

Tierod ends, ball joints appear to be good but I will replace those seperate from the $1000 budget if necessary.

Thanks!

Are you just looking to upgrade the front, or do you want to help the rear end? A good handling front end doesn't do much if the rear end doesn't go where it should. Do you have a sway bar on the rear, what is the condition of the spring and shock bushings? Rear springs sagging, shocks up to the job?

Start with Global West, weld on, subframe connectors $160 from Summit plus installation costs. Addco 1.125" front sway bar, about $200.00 Jegs/Summit. Addco factory installed style 7/8" rear sway, about $200.00, Jegs/Summit. The rear bar will require the factory style lower mounting plates (they are reproduced)as well as the long vertical link hard ware (may require some fabrication), about $70.00. KYB Gas-A-Just shocks, about $160.00 Summit. Global West strut rod bushings, high durometer, SRB-5, about $65.00, Mustangs Unlimited. Mustangs Unlimited may have the other parts cheaper as well. This assumes all the wear components are still good. $855.00 estimated total. Good luck with your project. Chuck

my 2 cents says dropping the fronts from 18" to 15-16" would yield more more aggressive steering and cornering than anything else. Turning 20+ inches of rubber on the fronts takes a lot of effort and more importantly torque from the push of the rear.

goodpost

I'm with Chuck on this stuff. A very good starting point.

As has been noted, all of this is useless unless you have a good foundation. I would replace all of the front end wear parts, regardless of if they look good or not. Rebuild your steering box as well. Start with a known good foundation and you won't be chasing problems.

Don' they make bolt in frame connectors that I could do myself?

Thanks!

The bolt ons get loose you tighten them, repeat, you crush the subframes, they loosen and the bolts wallow out the holes you drilled. Then, you weld them on.
