Getting best engine protection
#1
I was talking to a friend of mine today who is excited about me getting the 71. He's a mopar guy, he runs a 66 coronet with a 318 and a 70 dart with a 340.
He showed concern when I told him I using Mobil 1.
His claim is that all modern oils have little if no zinc and that our older engines have flat tappet lifters.
He further warned that these non rollers would not be protected with modern oil w/o zinc.
What y'all think?

My self i am a firm believer in zinc and phosphorous in motor oil to prevent wear , as i see it if it was not needed they would not have put in there in the first place , I use Valvoline VR1 20w-50 .

Companies do make zinc additives like ZDDPlus and I believe edelbrock.

Use one of the many break-in oils for the first few oil changes. The zinc is a sacrificial metal that fills the pores of the high pressure surfaces (Think cam and lifter). Once the surfaces have been impregnated with the zinc there is less need for it. I have had good luck with Brad Penn break-in oil. Comp Cams has one as does Joe Gibbs. Using the Valvoline racing afterwards is probably good insurance.

BTW, zinc and phosphorus was removed to extend catalytic converter life.

Low buck, touring style, '73 Convertible "rolling restoration", 351c, 2v heads with a shave and a haircut, Performer intake, Holley 650(ish), roller rockers, screw in studs, guideplates, stainless valves, Duraspark / Motorsports MSD, T-5 conversion. 1-1/8" front, 3/4" rear swaybars KYB shocks and some home brewed subframe connectors. Future plans; JGC steering box, Cobra brakes and... paint, interior, etc.
