February 2011 COTM!
#1
I bought my 72 Mach 1 new when I was 19 years old. I loved the look of the new Mustang in 71, but I was not able to buy one till 72. I wanted a new Mach 1 with a 4 speed and could not find any in stock in the Indianapolis area. I decided to order one in May of 72. The salesman showed me the 351 HO option package and since I was not interested in air conditioning at that time, and wanted the most performance that I could get, I decided to get that option. That package included the R code engine with solid lifters, aluminum intake manifold, 4 speed transmission, 3.91 traction lock nodular rear end, 15" wheels with F60X15 Polyglas tires, special cooling package, 80 amp battery. It is basically a Boss 351 with lower compression as it has open chamber heads. That is a good thing as it runs great on today's pump gas. I also ordered it with Sports interior package, AM/FM stereo, Magnum 500 wheels, rear window defroster, and power steering. It came with intermittent wipers, although I did not order it. I did not want the spoilers, side stripe, or argent/black paint on the hood. I agonized over what color to get, finally deciding on the Grabber blue. The car arrived in July 1972. I was told that production was delayed because they had to wait for the engine. I guess that mine is one of the last R code cars made in 72. The day it arrived I burned 3 tanks of gas (and a lot of rubber) just cruising around. I loved it, and still do. I got bit by the drag racing bug in 73 and ran stock eliminator in 73 and 74. When I got married I quit racing. It was my daily driver till 1977 when I got a used Ranchero. Also in 77 the original battery died. I replaced it with a JC Penney lifetime battery. They are still buying me batteries when I need one.
I have never had it restored, but it has had a repaint and the rust removed. It was also repainted and repaired when I let it roll into a tree in my back yard(ouch). The original engine has never been out of the car and with 96,000 miles, the car still drives and runs great. I love the sound of the solid lifters. I have replaced the dash pad, carpet and upholstery in recent years.
I really like driving this car. It takes me back to my younger days.
When I first got the car I decided that I was going to keep it as long as I lived. So far I have.

Have you gotten the Marti report? It's probably one of a handful with the HO engine in that color. I was only 14 when the 72 Mach1 came out so I could not buy one new but I have had mine (my 2nd 72 mach1) for 30 years. In the picture is my 1st Mach1 I bought in 1976.
