Exhaust gaskets
#1
Does the 73 351 C use exhaust gaskets on the manifolds, or is it a metal to metal fit
If someone has an untouched engine out, would you please look.

I pulled mine off my 351C 2V a little over a year ago, and I'm pretty sure there were gaskets. I'll check when I get home.

No gaskets here... I use Permatex Ultra Copper when I bolt mine back up.

Funny you should post this. When we replaced my engine (cracked block) we noted the
heads were from a '73. A late year '73 as it had the smaller valves. The engine I
replaced in my '71 was a 351C 4V D1 block with D3 heads. Someone did a crappy rebuild.
Long story short, the D3 heads had no exhaust gasket.

The manual doesn't mention a gasket, just says to clean the mating surfaces and apply graphite grease to the mating surface of the exhaust manifold. Mine has gaskets...

I checked the exh manifolds, and there is no evidence of gasket material on them, and I know I didn't scrape any off. I don't see any evidence of gasket material n the pics of the heads after I removed them.

No gasket was used from the factory. If you want to "improve the seal" or make up for decades of corrosion, apply a THIN coat of black RTV to the manifold, bolt it down, wipe any excess, let it set 8 hours. it will not leak and it will not "burn" away. Chuck

Great answers, I did put gaskets on my 72 Q code and it has exhaust leaks. So, I pulled it out and cleaned everything good and installed new gaskets.....it leaks just as bad as the 1st time.
Gonna pull it again and eliminate the gaskets. Thanks for all the answers, maybe it will save someone else a headache.
