Exhaust Droan
#1
My wife hates the sound of the exhaust droan from the mufflers while cruising. Would a sound deading mat under to rear carpet and truck help?

It would help some but drone has a lot to do with the type of muffler you are using.

I get harmonic noise at about 55 - 60 mph. It was REAL bad the ons highway ride I took with the Flowmasters. It was better with turbos, not much better with the OE replacement mufflers. I have also heard of a trick where you plumb 20-24" tubes behind the axle perpendicular to the tailpipes and cap them off. The tubes are slightly smaller than the tailpipes. There is a thread on Protouring.com by a user who built a '67 Shelby clone called Pacific Thunder.

Low buck, touring style, '73 Convertible "rolling restoration", 351c, 2v heads with a shave and a haircut, Performer intake, Holley 650(ish), roller rockers, screw in studs, guideplates, stainless valves, Duraspark / Motorsports MSD, T-5 conversion. 1-1/8" front, 3/4" rear swaybars KYB shocks and some home brewed subframe connectors. Future plans; JGC steering box, Cobra brakes and... paint, interior, etc.

When I die I want to die like grandpa, peacefully in my sleep... not screaming, like his passenger.

Yeah, they are called Quarter Wave Attenuators, they make for a very interesting Google search.
Both my 65 2+2 w/JBA midlength headers, 2.5 exhaust tubing, X pipe, Magnaflow's. And 73 Vert w/Patriot copy's of JBA's, 2.25 exhaust tubing H pipe, Dynomax's* have got the "droans". Working on QW attenuators to solve the problem.

Flow 40's that were previously on were the WORST

I'm running 40 series flowmasters and oddly the drone goes away above 60mph, that's how I know I'm speeding. I used dynamat under the carpet and behind the rear seat, still have the drone but at least it's a much more pleasant drone.
