Engine Connector/Buss

What is the purpose of this? Just a few wires screwed together.
Also, mine needs replacing.

That is a junction block for the ammeter (if you had a charge light this junction would not be present). The other rectangular device attached to it is a circuit breaker either for a rear window defroster or a convertible top pump motor. My 72 has that breaker for a rear window defroster which is attached to the hot cable at the starter solenoid stud. I hope this helps you out.
