camshaft failures
#1
For those of us that have killed a camshaft early, what brand was it, and how did you do it?

I have killed two Edelbrock cams, Performer RPM, .496/.520. Both are a long story.

What's yours?

killed a xe274 460 cam before. the thing i didn't do was remove the inner springs (all engine builders say that only chevy's have cam failure problems so they always install the inner springs) so i took their advance and my lobes went flat. so i always remove them.

also, during break in period, i set preload on rockers to only 1/8-1/4 preload then set preload to where you want after inner springs reinstall.

use a ZDDP oil, most oils today aren't for flat tappet cams anymore.

keep an eye on your temperatures, keep a house fan running infront of the radiator.

Freind of mine did the same exact thing (not removing the inner spring) on break in and had the same results. So I guess there is a pretty good reason they recommend it.
