Another Code Question
#1
I was looking at an ad on ebay for an R Code 72 it has a pic of the data plate and says the car is 100% Original. Pics show black deluxe door panels and front seats, which would be GA. Trim shows AA which is standard black and so is the rear seat in pics. The data pages here show the code as 1A do some cars have 1A, or is this another error on the pages?

Welcome to the world of sometimes "conflicting" authorities.

The "Mustang Recognition Guide 1965 - 1973" depicts "1A" as being the correct code for the Black, All Vinyl trim on the 1972.

The "Mustang...by the Numbers" book shows "AA" as being the correct code for the Black, All Vinyl trim on the 1972.

It should be noted that both "references" have "1A' for 1971 Mustangs and they both also have "AA" for 1973.

I tend to put more faith in the Marti book (Mustang...by the Numbers) and would take the "AA" as being the correct trim code for a 1972 Mustang with Black, All Vinyl trim.

That having been said, perhaps someone else will post up with their thoughts and/or observations.

I agree with BT on the codes

Also
Front seats are not original - no chrome buttons
Should have standard door panels and standard metal dash too.

Another thing that indicates that the door panels are not original is that the window sticker shows an AM 8 Track player (which is currently in the car) but there are no speakers in the doors. The door is wired for speakers (rubber boot in the door jamb) but whoever put in the door panels did not include the speakers. So when the seller says 100% stock original, that doesn't seem to be the case as far as the interior goes. Very nice car though!

Evidenced by the many wrinkles in the silver inlay in the front seats they have been recovered.
The deluxe door panels just look out of place on that car, like they are sticking out from the door, not attached correctly.

Otherwise looks like a fairly clean '72, but not all original as claimed.

All that being said, it's a virtual twin to my old '72, except for exterior color. If it was light pewter metalic, I'd be flying down and doing some serious talking to the guy.

The VIN is an April build date. An early 72 could possibly have a 1A interior code but an April car should have an AA code for the standard black interior which this car is supposed to have according to the both the invoice and door data code. The tach, 3 gauge pod, dash map light, front sports interior seats, and sports door panels are not correct for this car if looking for an all original car.

Good looking car though.

100% all original certainly has a different meaning to this guy. Another question though, I thought all "R" Codes both Bosss 351 and 72 HO cars have the guage package by default. Actually seeing AA code on original Data Plate supercedes the Mustang Recognition guide. I put more faith in Marti's research from Ford Database.

I'm not sure about the tach and 3 gauge pod as it relates to the Boss & R code cars as standard or optional equipment. I do know that the 3 gauge pod in the subject car is for a standard interior and the dash face around the tach is for a sports interior. The dash face around the glove box is for a standard interior.
