71 trunk lid and quarter extensdions
#1
71 mach1

What are the differences if any in the trunk lid and quarter extensions between the mach1 and others?

Someone years ago claimed there are differences but I did not get any details.

I believe the sportsroof (fastback) trunk lid is the same fit for 71-73. There were some minor differences in the inner panel around the latch/lock area. The 73 quarter extensions are different than the 71-72 extensions.Of course they are all different from the convertible and coupe pieces.

The 71 had Mustang spelled out across the back 72 - 73 had the scroll Mustang on the right. I also agree I think there are latch differences. So an original 71 will have all the pin holes along the back.
One thing on ebay that they all lie about is the tail light panel. 73 has some shape difference along the bottom and most of the replacements are 73 based. Even Ford service is likely to be 73. If a part would work Ford would drop previous years to cut number of parts in warehouse.

On my '71 convertible, the M U S T A N G letters were bonded on with double sided tape - no holes.

71 coupe and vert letters were stick-ons, no pin holes. 71 sportsroof had a tape stripe on the trunklid with the letters "MUSTANG" cut out. All 72-73 had the script - except for the Mach 1.

The trunk lock changed from a clip that you had to stick your hand into the trunklid for, to one that had a stamped clip that went into a slot and a was held by a couple rivets under the lock, accessible from the outside. I'm assuming Ford had a lot of worker injury claims from the early trunk lids. I lost some skin putting mine in.

The 73 end caps were molded shorter and did not go behind the bumper. The pieces that went under the bumper were molded urethane and painted body color, then screwed to the bottom of the cap. There was as David mention, a change in the taillight panel, which was holes for the stamped filler panel between the pushed out bumper. I am not aware if there was a contour change. These changes were to comply with Federal damage limits in low speed impacts. The repo panel I used already had the holes for this panel punched, which I felt was pretty stupid. Holes are easy to drill, filling holes is not. Given that there were far more cars without than with, why bother?

Sorry, yes, there is no physical difference between a sportsroof trunk lid and a Mach 1.
