Strange panel fit, or it has spraybombed rocker panels.

I really like this car.

Unusually nice in its execution, but forever a '73 with a '71 makeover - and the 351 decal on the air cleaner bugs me.

Nicely executed paint job, but the China bolt-ons will probably come back to bite the new owner in the butt sooner or later. Wasn't the Drag Pack a 1971 SCJ-only option?

I'll bet you that the engine was rebuilt once, if that black paint on the intake and valve covers is carried over anywhere else on the block. Still, promising and very well priced.

True, but the Ram Air isn't original, and neither are the incorrectly positioned hood locks. Stripes are off too. The devil is in the details with this one, and that's what kills it. It would have looked better had they simply skipped the incorrect bits entirely in sacrifice of their "bling."

Argent paint on the hood is too wide, but it doesn't look bad from the few pictures provided. Doesn't look as if panel fit was a consideration during the resto. That older paint job may not have held up as well as current urethanes either; paints have come a long way in 20 years.

I'd want to see the VIN before believing that's a real Mach.

Overpriced, but I am finding it quite difficult to find any flaws in this one, other than there may be come surface rust on that clip above the quarter window.

Of course, I'm biased to dark green Machs...

Overpriced, polished-up, fake-as-can-be "Mach 1." Old paint job that doesn't warrant $10k, much less $17k. What's more, when an engine job exceeds the value of the paint job, start looking around to find out what else they cheapened out on.

This is what gives me pause here:

He states "Don't really want to sell it, but it just sits in the garage and I would like to see someone who will enjoy it, have it."

Then he goes on to say "Possible trade for C5 Corvette or 1969 Chevelle in as good of condition as mine."

So, which is it? Do you want a fun, occasional driver project car, or not?

And the last one, that Houston car? At least he called it out as a Mock 1. He didn't try to push it as the real thing like most sellers do.

Translation: "I bought this thing on a whim, but I'm really a Chevy guy."

In short, he doesn't really want it, but he wants someone to pay through the nose for it anyway - especially as he admits to it having a 20-footer paint job.

He didn't outright call it a fake - he said it "might" be one, suggesting there is a possibility. There is no excuse for any seller to be ignorant of whether their VIN is an 02 or an 05 - particularly if the price is a premium - and it's painfully obvious that this car started life as a base Sportsroof. Granted, someone could have gone through the inane effort of swapping the Mach grille for a base grille and swapping or drilling the Mach 1 trunk for the right-hand badge. The bare-bones interior is also an indication of a base Sportsroof, though one could just as well order a Mach without the interior bells and whistles too.

Cole, there is a TON of knowledge on this site. I'm still learning, but the experts here have helped me a lot. Dead giveaways on fake Mach 1's are as Kurt pointed out. Typical of base Sportsroofs (not Mach 1) on 71/72 cars:

- Chrome trim around the headlights and on front of the hood.
- Chrome front bumper (only base Sportsroof and Boss).
- "Mustang" script badges on fenders and on the trunk lid. Early 71's I believe had "MUSTANG" spelled out on the trunk lid.
- Front grill has the pony in the gray grille. The Mach 1 had a black honeycomb grill with horizontile lights in them and the pony over the tricolor badge.
- The Mach 'stangs had "Mach 1" stickers on each fender and on the trunk lid. Not all Mach 1's had stripes or blacked-out hoods.

I'm sure there are details I'm missing; the biggest one is a true Mach 1 will have 05 in the VIN (ex: 1F05H). Sportsroofs have 02 (2F02F) and Boss/H.O. 'stangs have 02 and an R (for the engine code), example 1F02R.

I agree, in today's market it's not worth 20k but man it's pretty sweet. Maybe it'll get 20k @ BJ.

I had no idea what the VIN codes meant before I joined this site. I don't know his motivation or his knowledge level (it's very possible that some jackass told him "yeppers, you got yerself one boneefied Mach 1, that there's rare and worth $25k!"), but I give him points for not outright doing what everyone else on CL and eBay has done.

Exactly.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the proper breakdown of the variants; correct me if I am wrong.
  • A 1971/72 without Ram Air - whether base Sportsroof or Mach 1 - would not have the black or argent two-tone hood, nor will it have hood pins.
  • A 1971/72 Coupe or Convertible with Ram Air would get the two-tone hood treatment and hood locks, despite no side stripes.
  • All factory two-tone hoods came with hood locks. A two-tone hood without hood locks is a later conversion.
  • A '73 may have the two-tone hood with locks, even if not equipped with Ram Air.
  • All factory Ram Air '73s are 351-2V.
  • Two types of factory two-tone bodyside treatments exist:
    1. No hockey stick stripe: Aluminum moulding seperates lower blackout from main paint color (see: http://www.429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.c...t_info.htm )
    2. Hockey stick stripe: Two-tone area seperated by pinstripe w/no moulding (see above link).
Of course, that's for absolute factory cars. Many dealers did their own customizing to please the customer or their particular clientele - at which point, you can through most of these "rules" away (particularly the moulding-vs-side stripe combo, for every single aluminum-moulding car seems to have had the hockey stick stripes slapped on it.

True, but in this day and age, even someone without the knowledge can Google "What makes a 1971 Mustang a Mach 1" and wound up finding his answer pretty quickly.

That said, when someone is asking over $10k for something on eBay or Craigslist, I don't think it's unreasonable for the seller to do a bit of Googling first if any uncertainties exist. After all, they had enough internet savvy to post the ad, which takes more skill than the Google search.

Also...
The Mach 1 base engine was a 302. If the Mach 1 came with a 302 then the hood can either be the regular hood that came on coupes and verts or could be the NACA hood. The NACA hood was a no cost option for the 302cid Mach 1s.
