65 power steering swap
#1
Wrench
I have a power steering pump on the engine already but the car came with man steering.

What all is involved in swapping the manual steering over to power steering?

You have 3 choices, stock style with the ram and valve:

A conversion kit from Borgeson that uses a power steering box, will require modifications to stock clutch linkage:

Or rack and pinion:

Thanks Don C.

I have a few PS systems on my Mach 1 parts cars. Can I use any of that stuff?

I don't see why not. The only thing that comes to mind may be a difference in the pitman arm. I'm finishing up rebuilding my gearbox as we speak. (just took a break to catch up on missed threads) Tongue

71-73s have the integral power steering box, and do not have the valve/ram that 70 and earlier had. The steering box for the earlier Mustangs had a much longer sector shaft and there weren't any power steering boxes that could be swapped into them.

So i take that to mean the 71-73 stuff won't work. Bummer. I have lots of 71-73 parts and hardly any 65-66 parts.

Not sure about a new ram style p/s system but my stock p/s system on my first car (65 coupe) always leaked.

Our cars use a Saginaw power steering box (ala GM).

Low buck, touring style, '73 Convertible "rolling restoration", 351c, 2v heads with a shave and a haircut, Performer intake, Holley 650(ish), roller rockers, screw in studs, guideplates, stainless valves, Duraspark / Motorsports MSD, T-5 conversion. 1-1/8" front, 3/4" rear swaybars KYB shocks and some home brewed subframe connectors. Future plans; JGC steering box, Cobra brakes and... paint, interior, etc.
