302 heads and valve springs.
#1
Hello, I'm thinking of bidding on these heads. Does anyone know if they will fit on my 72 mach1's 2V 302.

The problem is I have stripped my engine down and can not get hold of any valve springs for my heads, I am told 72 302 valve springs are hard to get hold off or obsolete, so it might be just as easy to buy these set of heads to fill in.

Of course I know these aren't 1966 heads, although the seller says they are Ford heads and 0189 is stamped on them.

Based on the Seller's post, I think a "mistake" was made in reading the "date code" off the first head. I am inclined to believe the "6" should be an "8" as the 302 was not produced until 1968.

Nearly all Ford 302 2V head were essentially the same from 1968 - 1978. According to my references, they (except for C8OE-K and C8OE-L) shared the same combustion chamber of 63cc. C8OE-K and C8OE-L had the 58.2CC chambers.

The 1968 302 4V head (C8OE-F) had a 53.5 combustion chamber and larger 1.78" Intake Valves. It should be noted that the 1972 Head (D2OE-BA) shared this larger 1.78" Intake Valve.

If you are truly interested in these heads, I would suggest you contact the Seller and attempt to get the casting number off the heads. That will tell you EXACTLY what is being offered.

The casting # that you need is located on the underside (lifter valley side) of an intake runner.

I have a set of bare later model smog heads (mid 1970's engineering #, don't remember exactly) that i would give away if someone wanted them. Came off of a 1979 351W.

Thanks for the advice. I'm told there was only one type of spring Ford made for the 72 mustang 302?

I've measured the width of one of the old springs at 1.4260"

Do I need any more measurments?

Am posting on cellphone at the moment, so will check rockautos site later on pc at home.

Hello,

The rockers arms look more 1977 style because they look like the Cleveland style. Those 302 heads look like vintage 1975 thru 1977 style sled type rockers. Maybe they were upgraded.

Thank you

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm neither a mechanic or 'valve spring buyer' and am a bit unconfident at finding the right parts.

I've just measured the height of all my old valve springs and they all come up the same at just under 2". So I'm guessing the ones I want are these -

I spoke with the seller earlier and he mentioned they were upgrades. He's now selling them to upgrade further.

I don't really want to upgrade and want to keep the engine as standard as possible, so will probably leave them.

Thankyou for your input.

Good Day UKsilverMach1,

I found this website that provides a lot of specs. I just wonder why the cylinder head springs, installed, are a one year deal.

Check out this site for valve springs.

Good Day UKsilverMach 1,

This just FYI. I got a set of aluminum 5.0 L (302) with roller rockers cylinder heads for my 1994 302 roller motor. They are nice. Here is the website. Enjoy!
