Been busy stripping the R code down the past few days.

Every area in the front wheel wells is caked with a dark grey dense material that I thought was asphalt or really thick dirt. Very hard! Wouldn't come out without chisel and hammer. Had me stumped until my neighbor told me what it is. So, I will trow this out to everyone to take a guess as to what it is. This car has been in Wa state, specifically Yakima, all its life. I am holding some of the chunks in my hand. Who can guess what it is? whistling

Gravel and oil from coating gravel roads to keep dust down. I knew a guy who had an AMC Rebel Machine that he new the previous owner. Each year he coated his long country gravel driveway with used oil (back in the 70's) to keep the dust down. When he was stripping the car to restore he had piles of gravel and oil that had hardened onto the bottom of the car like concrete. That's my guess.

I was traveling in that area back in the 70's and got behind the trucks putting down what they told me was chip seal. They sprayed like tar down then put a thin layer of chipped up rock to seal the road. It got all over my new 71 Maverick Grabber. The tires would build up in diameter from it.
But it could be from Mt. St. Helen also, lol.

For those who took a guess, mustang sprint correctly answered! Interesting bit of history this car was carting around! Neighbor said he lived in the tri-cities area when Mt St. Helens erupted. There was about two feet of ash everywhere! He described it as a doomsday snowstorm.

Interesting! I would've guessed 'petrified poo,' but then again, I remember removing some of that from mine and it looked a bit different. whistling

Neat story - you might want to bottle some of that up and keep it for posterity sake. thumb

Thankfully, floors are solid! Big hole in the trans tunnel cut out for a Go fast super speedy shifterHuh I will patch in a replacement panel. Front aprons, core support and strut rod cross brace were banged up, those came off and will be replaced.
