1972 R Code at the dragstrip
#1
Tis is the only picture I have of my 1972 R Code Mach1 in action. It was a good day. I won class with 12.78 sec. at 110+ MPH. An old racer told me he was "glad to see someone racing a 427 Ford engine". I thanked him for the compliment and then showed him the 351C engine. He was very surprised.

Great pic- man and machine versus time. How many people here are old enough to remember when drag strips looked like that? I guess there might be some out there yet. What was done to the car? Probably didn't take very much to get into the high 12's. Traction used to be one of the biggest enemies. Cars would have an ok ET but a high trap speed.

Changed to CC 4V heads, middle of the road Crane hydraulic flat tappet cam, headers, torker intake, Mallory/Accel ignition, Holley 750 DP, 4.57:1 gears, and 9 inch slicks. I was my daily driver (without the slicks, most of the time) and I drove it to the track. Chuck

I am digging the idea of the daily driver with 4:57:1 gears. Smile I knew a guy who used to leave slicks on for the street in dry weather of course. Seemed like the police were a lot more strict about that stuff back then, at least in PA (late 70's / early 80's). I was pulled over once for not having the hood on my GTO. What was I to do, I needed the car and just the hood was being repainted. heh R code for '72 was basically a detuned Boss 351 engine, right? Sounds like you woke it up pretty well.

Now here is some respect for R codes! Can't wait 'til my R is done, gonna make some believers!
Love the nostalgia!
