1972 351 ram air
#1
Anybody know how much value is added to a 1972 Mach 1 351 2V ram air versus not being a ram air car?

Like most things the value to the car buyer is "eye candy". It simply looks awesome. What is said buyer willing to PAY for that look? hard to say but if it does not have it, he or she buyer knows it will cost 500.00 or so to get a good one and then paint. To the buyer a flat hood just says average... add that cool hood and it says I'm a badazz.

Can it be worth a thousand? Hard to say. Does it really add value? only if it has all the Plenum components which outside the hood can cost 2,000.00 especially if you are buying from a Mustang shop and you goof up and say how much you love them or NEED ONE TO MAKE IT ORIGINAL...THEN they will charge you FULL TILT! I doubt it will raise the value 2000.

with that said you dont have any more information than before you started...but that is one look at the situation.

They do look cool but in my case I have the hood but the expensive plenum and a/c are not there. I will be on the look out for the right parts. I have an a/c car and apparently the aftermarket plenum needs modification. You need to study up before spending the money. Just curious, how much HP is a ram air setup worth anyway?

Bright lime 72 Mach 1 with 351C 4V, with summit 600 carb(have a Holley too), Edelbrock dual-plane manifold, Hooker headers, 3 inch exhaust with flowmasters, 17 inch Eleanor wheels, FMX tranny, A/C, P/S, front disks and 350 rear gear. Drive it to work every day.

typical air improvement never yields more than 15..... I would guess 15 or less

I have Holley intake, 4v heads, Summit 600 cfm, full length headers, great big exhaust going into flowmasters, MSD ignition also and it feels under powered. Tune needs major work but maybe I need the ram air. 4 Speed must be nice. Can't currently burn the tires with full throttle acceleration.

lets look at your car as stock? One set of stats shows our cars from the factory without the RAM AIR....and the same cars WITH Ram Air...and ZERO difference in HP and torque. Now that is just one of probably several examples.

if your car is feeling sluggish simple things like checking your timing to the carb you are using... a riser 1 or 2" under the carb helps. Vacuum leaks etc all can affect the reaction. I run an Eldebrock 750 and my car will twist and turn ever which way and it will bark in second, but my car isnt stock either. Your 4v heads .... what do the chambers look like? valves? a few changes can help.

This is simply crazy to me! I have an ORIGINAL 302, with a Weiand Stealth 8020 intake and an Edelbrock 1420 600 com carb. I am running stock timing suggestions and had the carb mildly tuned after install, plus running all new vacuum. I also run a stock mechanical fuel pump, had an Edelbrock "performance" mechanical pump for a while, but it cracked at one of the npt fittings. Anyway, I would also suggest checking timing and getting your carb tuned. I chirp in first big time and also in second with a C4.

Ram air does not show any increase in rated horsepower because engines were tested on a stand...not installed in a vehicle. Ram air was never a part of any gross or sae dyno in 71-73.

There would be some effect on HP re forced induction type effect and cooler air fuel charge it won't be great amount the huge scoops on very highly tuned cars like pro stock only net about 17-25 hp. so the 2 little nostrils on our cars won't magically make more just because its a mustang Wink

Value wise here in Aus I would estimate factory ram air would be worth an extra 2500-3000 if that

Dude just swap out the 2.75 gears for instant tyre smoking results. Also does sound like the tunes off and a bit more carb my not hurt.

For me it would add something less than the cost of the reproduction system, about $600.00. If it was original to the car and had the proper hood and locks a bit more. Just my opinion. Chuck
