Bought this 1971 Mach 1 from a firefighter that doesn't have any more time to work on it. The firefighter bought it from a friend who had the same idea but couldn't continue it. By the time I got to it, the rust has ravaged the trunk, ate bits of the tail, eaten some of the cowl, and took out parts of the floor. There's also rust on the quarter panels and trunk lid.

The plan is the following:

1) Get her up and running first. Engine runs 145 on all 8 cylinders and the C6 auto shifts pretty strong. I'm guessing one of the previous owners at least rebuilt the engine. She hasn't been driven quite often so need to make sure she's road worthy first.

2) Address the rust. *fingers crossed*

3) Repaint to the original color of Medium Blue Metallic w/ white Mach 1 sports interior.

4) Look into modifying the suspension for possible open track dates and better handling overall: rear disc brakes, wider wheels/tires, sways, stiffen up the chassis, front coilovers, and better rear leaf springs/shocks/etc.

Purpose: Change in plans (aren't there always?!). My gf finally has a car she can depend on so this car is currently regulated as a pure project car. It'll be a resto-mod geared towards becoming modern while holding on to it's classic roots. Geared more for turns but with enough power to to keep the torque fans happy. Cool

Sounds like a sound plan, Rich. Keep us posted and include as many pics as you can. Many of us are doing some of the same things you describe.
