1971 Mach 1 -Stripe Question
#1
Is the Mach 1 stripe an option on 1971 Mach1? If the Marti report does not include the stripe does that mean that car came with no stripe?
Thanks for feedback!

Yes some came with stripes and others did not. Mine is a '71 M code Mach 1 and did not come with stripes. I did add them during repaint, painted on of coarse, but just because I like them. Originality was not a concern during my rebuild.

My 72 H code also did (does) not have stripes. Now I do have chrome moldings low on the door, fender and qtrs. I read somewhere, probably here, that if you had the mouldings, then no stripes, just the Mach 1 lettering, If you have the hockey sticks, then no chrome moudings.

I also concur with this info and add that it only pertains to how they came from the factory. If a car was ordered with the stripes then no lower bright trim molding from the factory. However, the dealership would then (as they do now) try to sell all kinds of options and accessories and the body stripes was an easy sell...so many cars ended up with both the bright trim & the stripes from the dealership. The lower bright trim was mostly a 71 thing as far as the Mach 1s are concerned. Some 72 Machs got it & some didn't. I'm not sure why this was the case. In 72 Ford changed up the 72s in minor ways and it seems to me that the bright trim got mixed into some of those changes.

That makes sense - mine came without stripes, but I have the moulding (or at least, everything but the front fenders anyway).

I thought about dumping the moulding, but I was careful to remove without damaging, and put it aside. I might pop it back on after paint... who knows?

Eric, decide BEFORE paint
If you don't use the trim, you need to grind and weld up the studs and stud holes

Also be careful with the clips and hardware

The pieces that were on my quarter panels, I simply plasma'd the sheet metal right around the trim pieces - so technically, they're still attached to the original quarter panels - LOL! I didn't want to hurt anything by pulling the pieces off without knowing how they went back on (or run the risk of messing up the clips and hardware).

The pieces on the doors are still on the doors until I get ready for body work - then I'll decide, I guess. I'll need to order new pieces for the front fenders if that's the case - those are missing.

Thanks for the advice!

I pulled mine off and welded the holes up, now I know thats not the purist way to go but, last time I checked the title it had my name on it.
