1971-73 1st purchase question

When you bought your first 71-73..did you have any doubts if you were going to buy a coupe, sports roof or convertible?
Or you knew exactly what you wanted?

I was actually a fastback man. I really wanted a 66 fastback, but my dad coaxed me into picking this one up so I could fix and sell since it was cheap.

Yup - I knew exactly what I wanted: '71 Mach 1 with 351C and auto. At the time, I had no idea there were so many variations of Mach 1s and Cleveland engines, but I'm happy with my 351C-2V. The one I fell in love with as a kid was Grabber Yellow with a tan deluxe interior, but I'm much happier with mine being Light Pewter and deluxe interior with black & gray Mach 1 seats.

In 1971, as a 9 year old, when dad took me to see diamonds are forever, I fell in love with the red thing James bond was driving!
Took me another 30 years to finally get one, but it was NEVER going to be any other car!

I set out for a green Sportsroof, and considered '73s at first; preferably a Mach 1 with argent stripes. Once I realized how attractive the '71-72 Mach 1 grille looked, and the minimum of emissions equipment on the '71s (not to mention the square-bore compatible intake on the 4V's), I set out to find a '71 Mach 1 in Dark Green Metallic with argent stripes.

As I grew up and learned to work on the Cleveland-based Ford 400 smoggers, I felt the 351C would be the ideal engine of choice.

I nailed everything on the first try (see my garage), though the 4-speed toploader wound up to be a C6. I can accept that.

How to buy a '71-73 Mustang:
Rule #1: Assume all classic car sellers are guilty until proven innocent.

I wanted a 71-73 black vert top, red/black interior. I really wantd a 4 speed, but they were just about impossible to find with my configuration.

Don...you may have some sort of record.

I'm a coupe guy. Love the medium metalic blue and argent stripes. Soooo happy I found a 73 Q code with a factory 4 speed. I'm a lucky guy...

Many of these are/were parts cars. 3 have been resold (much to my wife's delight), and 3 are planned for full restoration. After thinking about it some more I did miscount. I've bought 10 Mach 1s thus far.

I like the coupes too. Would you believe I've never seen one though in real life that I remember?
