1969 Popular Science 1971 "Detroit Report"
#1
Interesting mention of the forecasted changes for the 'new' 1971 cars.

The time of this article would correspond to the intro of the 1970 models.

I guess the rear fastback window reference to the "much refined Shelby Cobra sports car" could only be describing the Daytona Coupe???

It looks nothing like the Shelby Cobra. Maybe he meant the 1969 Shelby GT-500 Sports car. That would make more sense and it does look similar. Most non enthusiast's, like my wife, can't tell them apart!

Maybe they were talking about the large flattened out canopy design of the Daytona Coupe's rear window that definitely had some influence on all Mustang fastbacks. Other makes had similar rake to their fastback's rear windows of the day.

Here's a pic showing the 69/70 Shelby Mustang:

And I fully agree our Mustangs are very similar and have been documented as being heavily inspired by the 69/70 Shelby Mustangs. I prefer the front end of our cars as I thing these 69/70 Shelby Mustangs' front ends resemble the Javelins. (none of them look bad... Smile )

I have a book called the "Mustang Recognition Guide", and there's a sideview photo of a '71 Mach 1 with a Ford GT-40 behind it. The rooflines are similar, and the simulated honeycomb on the rear of the Mach 1 definitely smacks of the GT-40s vented rear fascia. I can see some resemblance there, but not so much with a Cobra sports car. Perhaps the writer meant that the new 71s looks were more refined than the preceding Shelby Mustangs looks. I'd agree...to me, the '69/'70 Shelbys were gaudy...kinda George Barris-ish. Just on looks alone, I'd take a '69 Mach 1 over a '69 Shelby any day, but Ford did allright with the '71s.
