17x9 wheels in the front?
#1
Now that I am squaring away the suspension for my '73 Mach-1, I'm starting to look for wheels and tires. I'm pretty set on a 17x9.5 wheels for the rear with 275-40/17's. For the front, I'm thinking 17x8 with a 245-45/17. My question is, will a 17x9 and a wider tire fit for the front?
Thanks...

think they will rub at full lock. No problems with 17x8 as that is what I have with 18x9.5 on the rear

If stock suspension the 8" will clear, the 9" will probably hit the upper ball joint

Depending on offset the 17X9 will hit the upper ball joint. My 18X9s hit the upper joint when the car us raised.

Like Jeff said, 17x9 will hit the upper ball joint. My 18x9 clear them by a hair´s length.
In the rear there is plenty of room. I got an 18x10 with an 285 tire and there is room to spare.

You may wanna check my thread on the subject. It contains a lot of measurements:

So, if 17x9 hits the ball joint and the 18x9 Almost hit, can I assume an 18x8 should fit?

if you put a 17x9 in the front if it did fit, the 71-73 mustang will turn like an army tank!!!!!!

stick with a 18x8 or a 17x8. i'd go with the narrowest tire that will fit on that tire size. i went with 235/45/17, i could of gone with a 225 but i would of had to go with 50 series.

the more offset on the wheel on a 17x9 will worsen the turning radius.

on http://www.vintagevenom.com one of the co owners has a 69 with cobra brakes and he has 18x9's all around but they are using sn95 wheels which is because of his cobra brake set up. with 18x9's you can go deeper on the BS'ing. but yet again, be careful cuz if you go too much further in on a lower car the more it'll rub on the steering box bolt on a ard left turn on A LOWERED CAR. stock height cars seems to be ok.

with with a 17x8 and if you must have an 18 for more choices in tires and height do it just for the rears.

if i had to do it again, i'll get a 17x7/8 front with the skinniest tire possible (prolly at max a 215-225 width) and a 18x11/12 wheels. instead i got 17x11's in the rear.

I have 17x7 all around with 225/55/17 on the rear and 225/50/17 on the front. They look good to meSmile
