12V Power Adapter inside the console compartment
#1
Hello All,

I looked through the forum but didn't see it so here goes. Midlife is working with me to get my wiring back in ship-shape again. It died the death of 1,000 splices.

While I've got it all apart I'd like to add a 12V power adapter inside the console compartment where it will be hidden as I car

find an 07 up Mustang in a Salvage yard and take it out of the center console of one of them and splice it in!

Oops, hit the wrong button there.

What I was saying is that it would be hidden and I could charge my iPod, cell phone etc. I'd like to wire it into the harness which I don't think is going to be all that difficult. I'm wondering if anyone has already done this and has a particular 12V adapter that worked well and was of a decent quality. I've seen some that can be illuminated via a ring around the adapter that could be possibly tied into the dash lighting so it only illuminates at night while driving and doesn't run the battery down.

Any other tips or suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

They are usually available at the normal parts stores.

I wonder if you could get away with a USB port instead?

I thought about the USB only but having a power outlet would allow me a bit more flexibility when the next "USB" adapter is released. Idea It's just a matter of time!

I haven't seen one of those. Are they illuminated? Anyone got a pic?

I also suggested just using or adding another cigarette lighter receptacle and obtaining the converter/plug-ins that can be found at any auto parts store.

Let me check your shorts!

I'm really trying to put this adapter inside the console so it won't be seen. Having a convertible I'm worried about someone seeing something inside the car and using their knife, slice the top and get inside to grab it. That happened to me about 8 years ago. I figure use a standard "cigarette" style power outlet so I can then use a "y" adapter for more than one outlet if I need it or to use a "USC" (what comes after USB, who knows?) adapter. Plus it would be nice to illuminate the inside compartment of the console just like the glovebox.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Is that a 07? Is there any illumination from the outlet?

Hey, MWEEPS, is that a speeding ticket in your pic?

No old Virginia Inspection paperwork. Even though you have a sticker you have to keep "proof of inspection" in the car. They are switching to a full sheet of paper instead of the carbon slip now. No illumination on 07. Some in 08 and 09 I believe have ambient lighting. Yes mine is an 07 GT.
