Quiet Mufflers search continues
#1
Hey Fellows, Hows everything going? I posted an ad on this forum before about my exhaust sounds very loud in my 72 conv. 351c, 2.5" w/dual exhaust. Didnt really get much of the response I was looking for. I hope I make myself clear this time. I want to take this car out on a cruise and enjoy the ride w/o the loud exhaust sound. The mufflers are so loud that I cant even listen to the music, or talk to anyone on the phone, plus my kids (6 & 8) dont like the loud sound, therefor they dont wanna go in that car. They love the car. It's even louder when you punch it. I've been looking around and someone told me to look for Dynomax SuperTurbo Mufflers b/c they're known to produce quietness yet power. I found Dynomax 17733 on Amazon (see link below), but this muffler is about 21inches long which is going to be just right if not too tight. This muffler is known to be very quiet as far as sound, and should improve performance. If anyone on this forum knows a particular Muffler that I can put on my Mustang to decrease the exhaust sound, please let me know and where I can get it. I was told Magnaflow mufflers are good too, 40 series are louder, 50 series gets quieter, 60, 70...so on. Again, please let me know if any has installed NOT SO LOUD mufflers on their car.

Putting quiet mufflers on a Mustang would be like putting a lubricated condom on Tiger Woods. It may be easier to sit on, but it ain't as fun to drive. I have experience with the former, but not the later...(I hope the former means my Mustang).

LOL, I know what you mean wolverine, but I don't like it when I take it for long drive. It's ok around town, but long drive with 3.50 gears at high rpm its just not as much fun.

I run the Dynomax Super Turbos on my 73 vert. They were a huge improvement over the Flowmaster 40's that were on the car. I believe there are 2 different lengths, 21 inch known as the Hemi Super Turbo and 18 inch which is what I have.

73 conv. 460, D0VE large valve heads, Performer RPM manifold, Voodoo 227/233 cam, Holley 950 HP carb, C6 trans, 3.25 trak-loc.

Well, maybe a partial solution to your needs, especially to save gas on that long drive is a 2.75 gear instead of that 3.50.

In fact, this is your lucky day. I have a 2.75 in my Mustang right now, and I was looking for a 3.25. So, if you want to even exchange our gears just let me know.

I know I am going to a lot of trouble and expense to end up with the short end of the gear ratio, but that is just what kind of guy I am...in addition to being the most interesting.

(Hope you weren't expecting an answer to your post when you saw my reply. By now, people around here should know better than to expect an answer to their question when they see a reply is posted from WOLVERINE...)

Hey Tommy, can you tell me where you bought them? Website, shop, etc.? Part #?
Thanks
Wolverine, thanks for the offer but I love my 3.50 posi gears which is why I pulled out 2.75 out of mine.

In reviewing your previous thread on the subject, it appears that some substantive suggestions were made to try and address your "problem" by several Members. As noted and/or inferred in those responses, your problem is accentuated by the headers. I would add to that the fact that you have a Convertible. In the previous thread, a couple of Members even made specific recommendations as to what they felt were quiet mufflers.

Quite frankly, I am trying to understand your statement that you "did not get much of the response that you were looking for." Perhaps I am missing something in your question which appears to be the same as the one previously brought forward.

Keep in mind that from the Factory, the idea is/was to provide the "best" compromise of what the "general" public wants/wanted in a vehicle. A lot of folks with our type cars are generally looking at "improving" on that compromise to suit their specific desires. Based on your statements as to your goal within the two threads, I would think that your "best" choice for quietness would be to return to the stock configuration of exhaust manifolds and some type of turbo muffler(s).

Hope this helps and not add to any confusion.

I have 2-1/4" Maremount OE replacement mufflers on my convertible. Iron manifolds, stock H pipe and tailpipes. It has a nice mellow tone and still has a little bark when you get into it.

One of my next projects is going to be the addition of sound deadening material for when the top is up.

Future plans; JGC steering box, Cobra brakes and... paint, interior, etc.

First off you want to stay away from any turbo muffler as they will resonate with headers as you have found out. Your quietest performance muffler will be the Magnaflow 60 or 70 series. Both are equal performance wise.
The main thing you need to do is drop your pipe size down to 2 1/4, no cross over, no X pipe, just true dual exhaust.
With 2 1/4 pipe and 60 series Magnaflows you will loose the resonation, but still have it sound nice on the outside.

Talk to your local muffler shop. A trip down on Sat morning and listen to some for yourself. Because my definition of quiet and your probably is quiet a bit different. To me any thing with a muffler is to quiet. I would run open headers if I could get away with it.Big Grin
